Removal And Installation: Transmission: Removal

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
- Remove the following items:
- Refer to: Battery Tray .
- Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe LH .
- Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe RH .
- Refer to: Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Intake Pipe .
- Remove the front subframe. Refer to: Front Subframe .
- Remove the power transfer unit. Refer to: Power Transfer Unit .

- Disconnect the cable from the manual control lever.
- Remove the bolt and position the cable aside.
- Remove the nut from the transmission fluid cooler tube bracket.
- Remove the transmission fluid warmer to transmission fluid cooler tube secondary latch.
- Using the special tool, disconnect the transmission fluid warmer to transmission fluid cooler tube. Use Special Service Tool: 307-569 Disconnect Tool TOC Line (1/2).
- Remove and discard the bolt and remove the transmission fluid warmer to transmission fluid cooler tube.
- Remove the transmission fluid warmer to cooler bypass cooler tube.
- Remove and discard the bolt.
- Loosen the fitting and remove the transmission fluid warmer to cooler bypass cooler tube.
- Inspect the transmission fluid warmer to be sure that the transmission fluid cooler tube seals and backing rings were removed with the transmission fluid cooler tubes and are not stuck in the transmission fluid warmer. If the transmission fluid cooler tube seals or backing rings are stuck in the transmission fluid warmer, remove the seals and backing rings.
- Remove the bolts and position aside the transmission fluid warmer.
- Remove the starter motor. Refer to: Starter Motor .
- Remove the upper transmission-to-engine bolts.
- Disconnect the PCV tube and position aside.
- Remove the bolt and position aside the vacuum harness pressure sensor.

- Remove the ground wire bolt from the RH cylinder head.
- Detach the retainers and position the ground wire aside.
- Remove the pin-type retainers and the radiator sight shield.
- Install the special tools on the engine.
- Straight side of the special tool.
- Sloped side of the special tool. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1246 Engine Spreader Bar., 303-1634 Lift Eyes (2).
- Using the special tools, support the engine. Use Special Service Tool: 303-F072 Support Bar, Engine.
- Remove the nuts, the bolt and the transmission support insulator bracket.
- Remove the rear roll restrictor bolt.
- Remove the transmission support insulator bolts.
- Remove the transmission support insulator studs.
- Remove the roll restrictor through bolt.
- Remove the roll restrictor and the transmission support insulator.
- Remove the transmission fluid cooler to transmission cooler bypass valve tube secondary latch.
- Using the special tool, disconnect the transmission fluid cooler to transmission cooler bypass valve tube. Use Special Service Tool: 307-569 Disconnect Tool TOC Line (1/2).

NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.
Remove the drain plug and drain the transmission. Install the drain plug.
Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)
- Position aside and support the LH halfshaft.
- Remove and discard the halfshaft retaining circlip.
- Remove the bolts and remove the roll restrictor bracket.
- Remove the retainers and the access cover.

NOTE: Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the engine clockwise.
Remove and discard the torque converter nuts.
- Disconnect the electrical connector and wiring harness retainers.

NOTE: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety strap.
Support the transmission with a transmission jack. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

- Remove the ground cable nut.
- Disconnect the wiring harness retainer.
- If equipped, remove the RH transmission-to-engine bolt.
- Remove the LH transmission-to-engine bolts.
- Remove the lower transmission-to-engine bolts.
- Separate the transmission from the engine and install the special tool and remove the transmission. Use Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.
- Remove the transmission fluid warmer bracket.

NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, remove the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes.
Remove and discard the bolts, remove the nut and the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes.
- Inspect the transmission case to be sure that the transmission fluid cooler tube seals and backing rings were removed with the transmission fluid cooler tubes and are not stuck in the transmission case. If the transmission fluid cooler tube seals or backing rings are stuck in the transmission case, remove the seals and backing rings.

NOTE: Failure to clean the transmission fluid cooler tubes can result in transmission failure.
If the transmission is to be overhauled or if installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, carryout the transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning. Clean the transmission-mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes by hand. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Cooler - Backflushing And Cleaning .
