High-Pressure Fuel Pump: Installation

  1. Remove the right front wheel and tire. Refer to: Wheel and Tire .
  2. Remove the retainers and position the splash shield out of the way.

  3. NOTE: Only rotate the crankshaft Clockwise (CW) or damage to the engine may occur.
    NOTE: The cam lobe for the high-pressure fuel pump must be at BDC for the high-pressure fuel pump installation.

    Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the crankshaft until the high-pressure fuel pump cam lobe is at BDC.

  4. Apply clean engine oil to the high-pressure fuel pump drive unit bore, the drive lobe and the high-pressure fuel pump tappet. Refer to: Specifications .

  5. NOTE: Align the notch on the high-pressure fuel pump tappet with the groove in the high-pressure fuel pump drive unit bore.

    Install the high-pressure fuel pump tappet.

  6. Install a new high-pressure fuel pump O-ring seal. Lubricate the new O-ring seal with clean engine oil. Refer to: Specifications .

  7. NOTE: Install new high-pressure fuel pump bolts.

    Install the high-pressure fuel pump and the new high-pressure fuel pump bolts. Alternately tighten each bolt 1 complete revolution until seated, then tighten in the following 2 stages.

    Torque

    :Stage 1: 44 lb.in (5 Nm) Stage 2: 55°

  8. Install the high-pressure fuel pump bracket, then install and tighten the high-pressure fuel pump bracket bolts.

    Torque

    : 150 lb.in (17 Nm)

  9. NOTE: Make sure that a new high-pressure fuel tube is installed.
    NOTE: Calculate the correct torque wrench setting for the following torque using the Torque Wrench Adapter Formulas.

    NOTE: Only tighten the 2 high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts finger tight at this stage.
    NOTE: Only tighten the high-pressure fuel tube retaining nut and bolt finger tight at this stage.

    1. Install the new high-pressure fuel tube and the high-pressure fuel tube retaining nut and bolt.
    2. Tighten the high pressure fuel tube flare nuts in the following 3 stages.

      Torque

      :Stage 1: 62 lb.in (7 Nm) Stage 2: 133 lb.in (15 Nm) Stage 3: 30°

    3. Tighten the high-pressure fuel tube nut.

      Torque

      : 150 lb.in (17 Nm)

    4. Tighten the high-pressure fuel tube bolt.

      Torque

      : 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  10. Connect the high-pressure fuel pump fuel feed tube quick release coupling. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

  11. Connect the electrical connectors and attach the wire harness retainers.

    1. Install the air cleaner outlet pipe, then install and tighten the air cleaner outlet pipe retainer.

      Torque

      : 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    2. Connect the quick release coupling and attach the hose retainers. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

    • Tighten the air cleaner outlet pipe clamps.

      Torque

      : 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

  12. Install the engine appearance cover.

  13. Install the splash shield, then install the retainers.

  14. Install the right front wheel and tire. Refer to: Wheel and Tire .
  15. Connect the battery. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  16. Pressurize the fuel system. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
