Starter Motor: Removal

All vehicles 

  1. WARNING: Always disconnect the battery ground cable at the battery before disconnecting the starter motor battery terminal lead. If a tool is shorted at the starter motor battery terminal, the tool can quickly heat enough to cause a skin burn. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
    NOTE: During the removal or installation of components, cap, tape or otherwise appropriately protect all openings and tubes/fittings to prevent the ingress of dirt or other contamination. Remove caps, tape and other protective materials prior to installation.
    NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

    With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .

  2. Disconnect the battery. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .

    Manual transmission 

  3. Disconnect the vacuum tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

  4. Loosen the clamps and remove the air cleaner outlet pipe.

    Torque

    : 36 lb.in (4.1 Nm)

  5. Remove the top starter bolt.

    Torque

    : 26 lb.ft (35 Nm)

    All vehicles 

  6. If equipped remove the underbody shield fasteners and then remove the underbody shield.

    Torque

    : 13 lb.in (1.5 Nm)

    1. Remove the starter motor solenoid control wire retaining nut.

      Torque

      : 53 lb.in (6 Nm)

    2. Remove the starter motor solenoid positive battery cable retaining nut.

      Torque

      : 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

    Automatic transmission 

  7. Remove the starter motor bolts and then remove the starter motor.

    Torque

    : 26 lb.ft (35 Nm)

    Manual transmission 

  8. Remove the lower starter motor bolt and then remove the starter motor.

    Torque

    : 26 lb.ft (35 Nm)

    All vehicles 

  9. Inspect the starter motor drive gear and ring gear. Refer to: Starter Motor Drive Gear and Flywheel Ring Gear Inspection  .
