Engine Front Cover: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: Do not loosen or remove the crankshaft pulley bolt without first installing the special tools. The crankshaft pulley and the crankshaft timing sprocket are not keyed to the crankshaft. Before any repair requiring loosening or removal of the crankshaft pulley bolt, the crankshaft and camshafts must be locked in place by the special service tools, otherwise severe engine damage can occur.
  1. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  3. Remove the following items:

    1. Refer to: Valve Cover  .
    2. Refer to: Catalytic Converter .
    3. Refer to: Crankshaft Front Seal  .
    4. Refer to: Generator - 1.0L EcoBoost (92kW/125PS) .

    1. Remove the CAC outlet pipe bracket bolt.
    2. Loosen clamps and remove the CAC outlet pipe.

    1. Disconnect the CKP sensor electrical connector.
    2. Detach the wiring harness retainer.

  6. Detach the wiring harness retainers.

  7. Disconnect the throttle body electrical connector and detach the wiring harness retainer.

    1. Loosen the clamp.
    2. Remove the retainers and the throttle body/adapter assembly.

  9. Remove the bolts and the engine lifting bracket.

  10. Detach the retainer, remove the bolts and position the coolant hose assembly aside.

  11. NOTE: Use a wooden block to protect the oil pan when supporting the engine. If the oil pan has been removed for oil pump drive belt removal, support the engine with the wooden block positioned under the oil pan rail of the engine cylinder block.

  12. Remove the bolts, nuts and the RH engine mount.

  13. Remove Special Service Tool: 303-1606 Locking Tool, Variable Camshaft Timing.

  14. NOTE: Note the different lengths of the bolts.

    • Remove and discard the bolts (1 to 16).

    • Remove the oil pan to engine front cover bolts and the engine front cover.

  15. Remove and discard the gasket.

  16. NOTE: Place clean, lint-free shop towels over exposed engine cavities. Carefully remove the towels so foreign material is not dropped into the engine. Any foreign material (including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces) that enters the oil passages may cause engine failure.
    NOTE: Do not use wire brushes, power abrasive discs or 3M™ Roloc® Bristle Disk (2-in white part number 07528) to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. They also cause contamination that will cause premature engine failure. Remove all traces of the gasket.

    Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material. Refer to: RTV SEALING SURFACE CLEANING AND PREPARATION . Use the General Equipment: Plastic Scraper

  17. NOTE: Place clean, lint-free shop towels over exposed engine cavities. Carefully remove the towels so foreign material is not dropped into the engine. Any foreign material (including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces) that enters the oil passages may cause engine failure.
