Cylinder Head: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: Do not loosen or remove the crankshaft pulley bolt without first installing the special tools. The crankshaft pulley and the crankshaft timing sprocket are not keyed to the crankshaft. Before any repair requiring loosening or removal of the crankshaft pulley bolt, the crankshaft and camshafts must be locked in place by the special service tools, otherwise severe engine damage can occur.
  1. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  3. Remove the following items:

    1. Refer to: Turbocharger .
    2. Refer to: Camshafts  .
    3. Refer to: Intake Manifold  .

  4. Remove the bolt and position the ground wire aside.

  5. If equipped, disconnect the CHT sensor electrical connector and detach the wiring harness retainer.

  6. Release the coupling, position the coolant hose aside.

  7. Remove the bolts and position the thermostat housing aside.

  8. NOTE: Note the position of the components before removal.

    Remove the valve tappets.

    1. Using a Polydrive #10 bit, remove and discard the cylinder head bolts. Use the General Equipment: Polydrive Bit Socket
    2. Remove the cylinder head.

  9. Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.

  10. Check the cylinder head distortion. Refer to: Cylinder Head Distortion .
  11. Check the cylinder block distortion. Refer to: Cylinder Block Distortion .
