Pinpoint Test Ax: The Compass Display Is Inoperative

  1. AX1 CHECK FOR COMPASS ZONE AND CALIBRATION SETTINGS THROUGH THE MESSAGE CENTER 
    • Ignition ON.
    • Enter the vehicle settings in the message center and verify whether the compass zone and calibration setting menu is present.

    Is the compass zone and calibration setting menu present? 

    1. Yes:  GO to  AX4
    2. No:  GO to AX2
  2. AX2 RETRIEVE THE RECORD DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE GPSM (GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM MODULE) SELF-TEST 
    • Using a scan tool, perform the GPSM self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    1. Yes:  For base audio,

      REFER to: INFORMATION AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM (Vehicles With: AM/FM/CD) .

      For premium audio,

      REFER to: INFORMATION AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM (Vehicles With: AM/FM/CD/SYNC) .

      For Sony sound,

      REFER to: INFORMATION AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM (Vehicles With: SYNC/Sony AM/FM/CD) .

    2. No:  GO to AX3
  3. AX3 RETRIEVE THE RECORD DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE APIM (ACCESSORY PROTOCOL INTERFACE MODULE) SELF-TEST 
    • Using a scan tool, perform the IPC self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    1. Yes:  For base audio,

      REFER to: INFORMATION AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM (Vehicles With: AM/FM/CD) .

      For premium audio,

      REFER to: INFORMATION AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM (Vehicles With: AM/FM/CD/SYNC) .

      For Sony sound,

      REFER to: INFORMATION AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM (Vehicles With: SYNC/Sony AM/FM/CD) .

    2. No:  GO to AX4
  4. AX4 RETRIEVE THE RECORD DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) SELF-TEST 
    • Using a scan tool, perform the IPC self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    1. Yes:  For DTC U0140:00, GO to Pinpoint Test AF 

      For all other Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), REFER to DTC Chart: IPC  .

    2. No:  For vehicles without the compass zone and calibration setting menu in the message center, INSTALL a new GPSM.

      REFER to: GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM MODULE (GPSM) (Vehicles With: AM/FM/CD/SYNC) .

      REFER to: GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM MODULE (GPSM) (Vehicles With: SYNC/Sony AM/FM/CD) .

      For vehicles equipped with the compass zone and calibration setting menu in the message center, GO to AX5

  5. AX5 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) SELF-TEST 
    • Using a scan tool, perform the BCM self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    1. Yes:  REFER to: BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) .
    2. No:  INSTALL a new compass module.

      REFER to: Compass Module  .

      SET the compass zone and CALIBRATE the compass. REFER to the Owner's Literature TEST the system for normal operation. If the compass is still inoperative, GO to  AX11

  6. AX6 CHECK THE COMPASS MODULE VOLTAGE SUPPLY 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Compass Module.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:

    Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    1. Yes:  GO to AX7
    2. No:  VERIFY the BCM fuse 67 (7.5A). If OK, REPAIR the circuit. If not OK, REFER to the OEM WIRING DIAGRAMS to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
  7. AX7 CHECK THE COMPASS MODULE GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure:

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    1. Yes:  GO to AX8
    2. No:  REPAIR the circuit.
  8. AX8 CHECK THE COMPASS COMMUNICATION BUS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: BCM C2280H.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:

    Is any voltage present? 

    1. Yes:  REPAIR the circuit.
    2. No:  GO to AX9
  9. AX9 CHECK THE COMPASS COMMUNICATION BUS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Measure:

    Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
    C909-3 Ω -

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    1. Yes:  GO to AX10
    2. No:  REPAIR the circuit.
  10. AX10 CHECK THE COMPASS COMMUNICATION BUS FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure:

    Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    1. Yes:  INSTALL a new compass module.

      REFER to: Compass Module  .

      SET the compass zone and CALIBRATE the compass. TEST the system for normal operation. If the compass is still inoperative, GO to AX11

    2. No:  REPAIR the circuit.
  11. AX11 CHECK FOR CORRECT BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION 
    • Ignition ON.
    • Disconnect and inspect all BCM connectors.
    • Repair:
      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    • Reconnect the BCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    1. Yes:  CHECK On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) address this concern, INSTALL a new BCM.

      REFER to: BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) .

    2. No:  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
