WARNING: Do not smoke, carry lighted tobacco or have an open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel-related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.

All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Remove the engine appearance cover. Refer to ENGINE APPEARANCE COVER - EXPLODED VIEW .
  3. Recover the A/C system. Refer to HVAC - CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS .
  4. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .
  5. NOTE: Use a steering wheel holding device (such as Hunter® 28-75-1 or equivalent).

    Using a suitable holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.

  6. Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  7. Remove the LH and RH front wheels and tires. Refer to WHEELS & TIRES .
  8. Remove the LH and RH inner splash shields. Refer to BODY PANEL SYSTEM - FRONT END BODY PANELS .
  9. Remove the accessory drive belt and the power steering belt. Refer to ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT .
  10. Disconnect the power steering cooler hose and drain the power steering fluid into a suitable drain pan.

  11. Remove the power steering cooler bracket bolt from the RH side of the subframe.

  12. Remove the degas bottle. Refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  13. Disconnect the hose from the power steering reservoir.

  14. Remove the engine Air Cleaner (ACL) and ACL outlet pipe. Refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM & INTAKE AIR FILTERING SYSTEM .
  15. Remove the battery tray. Refer to BATTERY, BATTERY MOUNTING & BATTERY CABLES .
  16. Remove the 2 nuts and disconnect the power feed from the battery terminal.
    • Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connector.

  17. Remove the nut and the ground wire.
    • Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connector.

  18. Detach the 2 wiring harness retainers from the stud bolt and bracket.

  19. Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connector.

  20. Detach the 3 wiring harness retainers from the bracket and inner fender.

  21. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the upper intake manifold.

  22. Disconnect the upper radiator hose, lower radiator hose and 2 heater hoses from the thermostat housing.

  23. Disconnect the transaxle control cable from the control lever.
    • Detach the control cable from the bracket.

  24. If equipped, detach the engine block heater harness retainers from the radiator support and the A/C suction tube.

  25. Remove the A/C tube bracket bolt.

  26. Remove the nut and disconnect the A/C pressure tube fitting.
    • Discard the O-ring seal.

  27. Remove the safety clip from the A/C fitting.
    • Disconnect the A/C suction tube fitting.

  28. Disconnect the 2 PCM electrical connectors.
    • Detach the 2 wiring harness retainers from the stud bolts.

  29. Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connector.
    • Detach the wiring harness retainer from the RH valve cover stud bolt.

  30. Remove the bolt and the ground wire from the engine front cover.

  31. Remove the nut and the radio interference capacitor wire from the engine front cover stud.

  32. Remove the 2 secondary latches from the transmission fluid cooler tubes.

  33. Using the Transmission Cooler Tube Disconnect Tool, disconnect the transmission cooling tubes.

    NOTE: The guide pin bolts are different sizes. The larger bolt is the upper guide pin bolt.

    Remove the 2 RH and 2 LH brake caliper guide pin bolts and position aside the front brake calipers and secure with a length of mechanic's wire.

    Remove the bolts and position aside the RH and LH front wheel speed sensor.

    Remove the 2 RH and 2 LH front shock absorber lower flag bolts and nuts.

  37. Remove the exhaust Y-pipe. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM .
  38. Remove the 4 oil pan-to-transaxle bolts.

  39. Remove the 2 fasteners and the inspection cover.

  40. Remove and discard the 3 torque converter bolts.

  41. Remove the drain plug and drain the engine oil.
    • Install the drain plug and tighten to 27 Nm (20 lb-ft).

  42. Remove and discard the engine oil filter.

    All-Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles 

  43. NOTE: Index-mark the driveshaft for installation.

    Remove the 4 bolts and support the driveshaft with a length of mechanic's wire.

    All vehicles 

  44. Remove the 2 nuts and the roll restrictor heat shield.

  45. NOTE: Do not allow the intermediate shaft to rotate while it is disconnected from the gear or damage to the clockspring can occur. If there is evidence that the intermediate shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .

    Remove and discard the steering intermediate shaft bolt.

    • Separate the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear.

  46. Remove the 3 RH subframe-to-lower bumper nuts.

  47. Remove the 3 LH subframe-to-lower bumper nuts and separate the lower bumper from the subframe.

  48. Mark the relationship of the front subframe to the underbody at the mounting locations.

  49. Remove the 2 bolts and the subframe brace.

  50. NOTE: The fuel and vapor tube assembly clip must remain attached to the transaxle case stud during engine removal. Failure to follow these instructions can result in damage to the fuel and vapor tube assembly.

    Disconnect the fuel supply tube and Evaporative Emission (EVAP) tube quick connect couplings. For additional information, refer to the QUICK CONNECT COUPLING procedure.

  51. Position a 2 x 6 board, 60 in (1, 524 mm) in length and two 2 x 6 boards, 24 in (609.6 mm) in length onto the Powertrain Lift.

    Position the Powertrain Lift and boards.

    1. Position the long board directly under the control arms.
    2. Position the short boards under the engine oil pan and transmission.

  53. Install an Adjustable Grip Arm from the Powertrain Lift to the LH engine-to-transmission bolt hole.

  54. Remove the transaxle support insulator through bolt and nut.

  55. Remove the 3 nuts, the bolt and the transaxle support insulator bracket.

  56. Remove the nut, bolt and engine mount brace.

  57. Remove the 4 engine mount nuts.

  58. Remove the 3 bolts and the engine mount.

  59. Remove the 2 nuts, 2 bolts and the 2 subframe support brackets.

  60. Remove the 2 front subframe nuts.

  61. Remove the 2 middle subframe nuts and lower subframe onto the Powertrain Lift.
    • Lower the powertrain/subframe assembly from the vehicle.

  62. Install the Engine Lift Eye on the LH cylinder head.

  63. Install the Floor Crane and Spreader Bar.

  64. Remove the starter motor solenoid cover.

  65. Remove the 2 nuts and the starter motor wiring terminals.

  66. Disconnect the wiring harness retainer from the starter motor stud bolt.

  67. Remove the bolt, stud bolt and the starter.

  68. Disconnect the transmission control electrical connector.
    • Detach the wiring harness retainer.

  69. Remove the bolt for the ground on the back side of the RH cylinder head and position the wiring harness aside.

  70. Remove the 2 nuts from valve cover for power steering hose retainers.

    Remove the 3 bolts and position aside the power steering pump.

  72. Disconnect the RH Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS) electrical connector.

  73. Remove the 4 nuts (3 shown) and the RH catalytic converter.
    • Discard the gasket and the nuts.

  74. Remove the Adjustable Grip Arm.

  75. Install a ratchet strap from the front subframe to the LH engine lift eye.

  76. Using the Floor Crane and Spreader Bar, remove the powertrain and subframe as an assembly from the Powertrain Lift and set on the ground.
    • Position wood blocks under the engine and transmission.
    • Secure the RH knuckle to the transaxle with a ratchet strap to keep RH halfshaft in place.

  77. Remove the ratchet strap.

    AWD vehicles 

  78. Remove the 2 RH halfshaft-to-PTU bracket bolts.

  79. Remove the 5 bolts and the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) support bracket.

    FWD vehicles 

  80. Remove the RH halfshaft bolt and 2 stud bolts.

    All vehicles 

  81. Disconnect the EVAP tube quick connect coupling from the purge valve. For additional information, refer to the QUICK CONNECT COUPLING procedure.
    • Detach the EVAP tube retainer.

  82. NOTE: Do not separate the fuel and vapor tube assembly clip from the transaxle case stud. Failure to follow these instructions can result in damage to the fuel and vapor tube assembly.

    Disconnect the fuel supply tube. For additional information, refer to the QUICK CONNECT COUPLING procedure.

  83. Remove the 2 engine-to-transaxle bolts.

  84. Remove the 5 transaxle-to-engine bolts.
    • Separate the transaxle from the engine.

  85. Using the Floor Crane and Spreader Bar, remove the engine from the transaxle.
