Park System: Removal

All vehicles
- With the vehicle in PARK, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to
JACKING & LIFTING
.
Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles
- Remove the transfer case. For additional information, refer to
TRANSFER CASE
.
Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles
- Remove and discard the 4 driveshaft-to-transmission flange bolts. Disconnect the driveshaft from the transmission.
- Using mechanic's wire, support the driveshaft.
- Remove the output shaft flange.
- Remove and discard the output shaft flange bolt.
- Remove the output shaft flange.
All vehicles
- Remove the transmission support crossmember. For additional information, refer to FULL FRAME AND BODY MOUNTING .
- Remove the transmission insulator from the extension housing.
- Discard the bolts.
- Disconnect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor.
- Using the Output Shaft Locknut Socket, remove and discard the output shaft retaining nut.
- Remove the extension housing-to-case bolts and the transmission extension housing.
- Remove and discard the extension housing gasket.
- Remove the parking rod guide plate-to-case bolts and parking rod guide plate.
- Remove the park pawl components.
- Remove the park pawl return spring.
- Remove the park pawl.
- Remove the park pawl shaft.
- Inspect the output shaft and park gear for damage.
- Inspect the park gear for damage.
- Inspect the OSS gear for damage.
- If damage is found to either the OSS or park gears, remove the park gear and output shaft as an assembly.
- Remove the park and OSS gear from the output shaft.
- Remove the output shaft park gear thrust washer.
- Inspect the Teflon® seals in the rear of the case. If the seals are worn or damaged, install new scarf cut seals.
NOTE:
It may be necessary to tap the driveshaft yoke with a plastic or rubber soft-faced hammer if a pry area is not present on the driveshaft side.
NOTE:
Index-mark the driveshaft flanges.
NOTE:
The transmission insulator studs may come out of the insulator while removing the insulator-to-crossmember nuts. Install new transmission insulator studs if the studs come out.
NOTE:
The park gear and OSS gear may be present on the output shaft.
