Diagnostic Routines

ENGAGEMENT CONCERNS: NO FORWARD

Possible Component Reference/Action
201 - ROUTINE 
Transmission Fluid   
  • Incorrect level
  • CHECK the transmission fluid level. ADJUST transmission fluid to correct level. REFER to PRELIMINARY INSPECTION .
Selector Lever Linkage   
  • Selector lever linkage - damage or incorrectly adjusted
Powertrain Control System   
  • PCM (gasoline engines), Transmission Control Module (TCM) (diesel engines), external vehicle harness, transmission internal harness, Shift Solenoid A (SSA) or Shift Solenoid E (SSE)
  • DISCONNECT the transmission harness connector and retest. If the concern is still present, proceed to MAIN CONTROL INSPECTION . If the concern is resolved, CARRY OUT the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) and Key ON Engine Running (KOER) self-test. For gasoline engines GO to PINPOINT TEST A . For diesel engines GO to PINPOINT TEST F . REPAIR as required. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the vehicle system for normal operation.
Pump   
  • Pump gear - failure
  • VERIFY line pressure. If line pressure is below specification, INSTALL a new pump assembly. REFER to TRANSMISSION - OVERHAUL .
Main Control   
  • Defective manual valve
  • Inspect connection to shift linkage.
  • Defective forward (1, 2, 3, 4) clutch regulator or latch valves
  • Defective overdrive (4, 5, 6) clutch regulator or latch valves
Clutch Plates   
  • Forward (1, 2, 3, 4) clutch friction and steel plate - failure
  • Overdrive (4, 5, 6) clutch friction and steel plate - failure
  • INSPECT the overdrive (4, 5, 6) clutch assembly for damage.
ENGAGEMENT CONCERNS: NO REVERSE

202 - ROUTINE 
Transmission Fluid   
  • Incorrect level
  • CHECK the transmission fluid level. ADJUST transmission fluid to correct level. REFER to PRELIMINARY INSPECTION .

Powertrain Control System

  • Direct (3, 5, R) clutch or low/reverse (1, R) clutch friction and steel plate - failure
  • INSPECT the direct clutch and/or the low/reverse assembly for damage.
ENGAGEMENT CONCERNS: HARSH REVERSE

203 - ROUTINE 
Powertrain Control System   
  • PCM (gasoline engines), Transmission Control Module (TCM) (diesel engines), external vehicle harness, transmission internal harness, Shift Solenoid B (SSB) or Shift Solenoid D (SSD)
  • CARRY OUT the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) and Key ON Engine Running (KOER) self-test. For gasoline engines GO to PINPOINT TEST A . For diesel engines GO to PINPOINT TEST F . REPAIR as required. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the vehicle system for normal operation.
Main Control   
  • Defective direct (3, 5, R) clutch or low/reverse (1, R) clutch regulator valve

Driveline   
  • Engine driveline looseness in the driveshaft, U-joints or the engine mounts
  • REPAIR as required.

204 - ROUTINE 
Powertrain Control System

Main Control   
  • Defective forward (1, 2, 3, 4) clutch regulator valve

Driveline

207 - ROUTINE 
Transmission Fluid   
  • Incorrect level
  • CHECK the transmission fluid level. ADJUST transmission fluid to correct level. REFER to PRELIMINARY INSPECTION .
Selector Lever Linkage (Internal/External)   
  • Damaged, out of adjustment
Incorrect Pressures   
  • Line pressure - low
Transmission Filter and Seal Assembly   
  • Not seated, damaged or plugged
  • Inspect for position, damage and restriction. Install a new filter and seal assembly.
  • Pump Adapter Seal
  • Inspect for crack or damage. Install new as required.
Main Controls   
  • Manual Valve
  • Inspect for damage. Replace as required.
  • Mounting bolt torque
  • Inspect for loose main control to transmission bolts. Tighten to specification.
  • Solonoid Pressure Regulator Valve
  • Inspect for valve stuck in spring compressed position or broken spring. Clean or replace main control as required.
Pump Assembly   
  • Gear
  • Inspect for damage. Replace as required.
  • Sun gear hub/splines
  • Inspect for damage. Replace as required.
Other Possible Components   
  • Turbine shaft
  • Inspect for damage. Repair as required.
  • Front planetary gear set
  • Inspect for damage. Repair as required.
  • Forward/Direct clutch drum
  • Inspect for damage. Repair as required.
  • Output shaft/ring gear

  • CARRY OUT the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) and Key ON Engine Running (KOER) self-test. For gasoline engines GO to PINPOINT TEST A . For diesel engines GO to PINPOINT TEST F . REPAIR as required. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the vehicle system for normal operation.
  • Default to 5th gear
  • RETRIEVE DTCs.
ENGAGEMENT CONCERNS: DELAYED FORWARD & DELAYED REVERSE

209 - ROUTINE 
Transmission Fluid   
  • Incorrect level
  • CHECK the transmission fluid level. ADJUST transmission fluid to correct level. REFER to PRELIMINARY INSPECTION .
Pump   
  • Transmission fluid filter and seal assembly - plugged, damaged
  • VERIFY line pressure. If line pressure is below specification, INSTALL a new transmission fluid filter assembly.
  • Pump gear - failure
  • VERIFY line pressure. If line pressure is below specification, INSTALL a new pump assembly. REFER to TRANSMISSION - OVERHAUL .
SHIFT CONCERNS: SOME/ALL SHIFTS MISSING

210 - ROUTINE 
Transmission Fluid   
  • Incorrect level
  • CHECK the transmission fluid level. ADJUST transmission fluid to correct level. REFER to PRELIMINARY INSPECTION .
  • Transmission fluid filter and seal assembly - plugged, damaged
  • INSTALL a new transmission fluid filter assembly.
Selector Lever Linkage Damaged or Incorrectly Adjusted   
  • Selector lever cable
Powertrain Control System   
  • PCM (gasoline engines), Transmission Control Module (TCM) (diesel engines), external vehicle harness, transmission internal harness, Shift Solenoid A (SSA) or Pressure Control Solenoid A (PCA)
  • CARRY OUT the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) and Key ON Engine Running (KOER) self-test. For gasoline engines GO to PINPOINT TEST A . For diesel engines GO to PINPOINT TEST F . REPAIR as required. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the vehicle system for normal operation.
  • Multiple shift missing (more than one gear)
  • If some shifts are missing, determine which shifts do not occur. REFER to CLUTCH  and SOLENOID APPLICATION CHARTS . MONITOR appropriate PIDs as listed in diagnostics.
  • Default to 5th gear
  • RETRIEVE DTCs.
SHIFT CONCERNS: TIMING - EARLY/LATE

Possible Component Reference/Action
211 - ROUTINE 
Powertrain Control System   
  • PCM (gasoline engines), Transmission Control Module (TCM) (diesel engines), external vehicle harness, transmission internal harness
  • CARRY OUT the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) and Key ON Engine Running (KOER) self-test. TEST the vehicle system for normal operation.
  • Engine driveability concerns
Main Control   
  • Bolts not tightened to specification
  • TIGHTEN to specification.
  • Main control unit contaminated, solenoid(s) damaged, stuck or bore damaged. Manual valve damaged, stuck or bore damaged
  • INSPECT for damage and/or contamination.
Incorrect Pressures   
  • Application pressures are incorrect
  • Incorrect application pressures may be due to non-transmission components, main control assembly or internal transmission damage. REPAIR all non-transmission components then continue with this routine.
Other   
  • Tire size change, axle ratio change
  • VERIFY that the vehicle has the original equipment. REFER to the certification label. Changes in tire size and axle ratio will affect shift timing. Vehicles equipped with a TCM may set DTC P1635.
SHIFT CONCERNS: TIMING - ERRATIC/HUNTING

  • CARRY OUT the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) and Key ON Engine Running (KOER) self-test. TEST the vehicle system for normal operation.
Torque Converter Concerns   
  • Torque Converter Clutch (TCC)
SHIFT CONCERNS: SOFT/SLIPPING (SOME OR ALL)

213 - ROUTINE 
Transmission Fluid   
  • Incorrect level
  • CHECK the transmission fluid level. ADJUST transmission fluid to correct level. REFER to PRELIMINARY INSPECTION .
  • Transmission fluid filter and seal assembly - plugged, damaged
  • INSTALL a new transmission fluid filter assembly.
Powertrain Control System   
  • PCM (gasoline engines), Transmission Control Module (TCM) (diesel engines), external vehicle harness, transmission internal harness, or Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT)
  • CARRY OUT the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) and Key ON Engine Running (KOER) self-test. For gasoline engines GO to PINPOINT TEST B . For diesel engines GO to PINPOINT TEST G . REPAIR as required. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the vehicle system for normal operation.
Pump   
  • Transmission fluid filter and seal assembly - plugged, damaged
  • VERIFY line pressure. If line pressure is below specification, INSTALL a new transmission fluid filter assembly.
  • Pump gear - failure
  • VERIFY line pressure. If line pressure is below specification, INSTALL a new pump assembly. REFER to TRANSMISSION - OVERHAUL .
Main Control   
  • Bolts not tightened to specification

  • CARRY OUT the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) and Key ON Engine Running (KOER) self-test. READ and RECORD the DTC(s). Go to the appropriate PINPOINT TEST  for that DTC. REPAIR as required. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the vehicle system for normal operation.
Main Control   
  • Main control contaminated, solenoid(s) damaged, solenoids stuck or bore damaged
  • INSPECT for damage and/or contamination.
  • Manual valve damaged, stuck or bore damaged
  • INSPECT for damage and/or contamination.
SHIFT CONCERNS: NO 1ST GEAR, ENGAGES IN HIGHER GEAR

215 - ROUTINE 
Powertrain Control System   
  • PCM (gasoline engines), Transmission Control Module (TCM) (diesel engines), external vehicle harness, transmission internal harness, Shift Solenoid A (SSA), Shift Solenoid B (SSB), Shift Solenoid C (SSC), Shift Solenoid D (SSD), Shift Solenoid E (SSE), Pressure Control Solenoid A (PCA), Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) or Output Shaft Speed (OSS)
  • CARRY OUT the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) and Key ON Engine Running (KOER) self-test. READ and RECORD the DTC(s). Go to the appropriate PINPOINT TEST  for that DTC. REPAIR as required. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the vehicle system for normal operation.
Incorrect Gear   
  • Main control failure
  • DETERMINE which gear the transmission is in. Using the scan tool, MONITOR GEAR, GEAR RAT AND TRAN_RAT PIDS.
Clutch Plates   
  • Forward (1, 2, 3, 4) clutch friction and steel plate - failure
  • INSPECT the forward (1, 2, 3, 4) clutch assembly for damage. REPAIR as required. REFER to TRANSMISSION - OVERHAUL .
SHIFT CONCERNS: NO MANUAL 1ST GEAR

216 - ROUTINE 
Transmission Fluid   
  • Incorrect level
  • CHECK the transmission fluid level. ADJUST transmission fluid to correct level. REFER to PRELIMINARY INSPECTION .
  • Transmission fluid filter and seal assembly - plugged, damaged
  • INSTALL a new transmission fluid filter assembly.
Selector Lever Linkage   
  • Selector lever cable system - damaged, misadjusted
Powertrain Control System   
  • PCM (gasoline engines), Transmission Control Module (TCM) (diesel engines), external vehicle harness, transmission internal harness, or Shift Solenoid A (SSA)
  • CARRY OUT the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) and Key ON Engine Running (KOER) self-test. For gasoline engines GO to PINPOINT TEST A . For diesel engines GO to PINPOINT TEST F . REPAIR as required. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the vehicle system for normal operation.
Clutch Plates

  • INSPECT the intermediate (2, 6) clutch assembly for damage. REPAIR as required. REFER to TRANSMISSION - OVERHAUL .
SHIFT CONCERNS: NO 3-4 SHIFT (AUTOMATIC)

  • INSPECT the Overdrive (4, 5, 6) clutch assembly for damage. REPAIR as required. REFER to TRANSMISSION - OVERHAUL .
  • Direct (3, 5, R) clutch friction and steel plate - failure
  • PERFORM Air Pressure Test on the direct (3, 5, R) clutch. REFER to SPECIAL TESTING PROCEDURES . INSPECT the direct (3, 5, R) clutch assembly for damage. REPAIR as required.
SHIFT CONCERNS: NO 3-2 SHIFT (AUTOMATIC)

224 - ROUTINE 
Powertrain Control System   
  • PCM (gasoline engines), Transmission Control Module (TCM) (diesel engines), external vehicle harness, transmission internal harness, Shift Solenoid B (SSB) or Shift Solenoid C (SSC)
