Pinpoint Test

  1. CHECK FOR CORRECT OPERATION OF THE COOLING SYSTEM
    1. Verify the engine cooling system and thermostat are functioning correctly.
    • Does the engine cooling system and thermostat operate correctly? 
    1. Yes:  GO to on page 2.
    2. No:  REFER to SYMPTOM CHART: ENGINE COOLING .
  2. RETRIEVE THE RECORDED Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) FROM THE Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) SELF-TEST
    1. Using a scan tool, perform the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
    • Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 
    1. Yes:  REFER to Section 3 of the appropriate Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE MODELS .
    2. No:  GO to on page 2.
  3. RETRIEVE THE RECORDED Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) FROM THE Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) SELF-TEST
    1. Using a scan tool, perform the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) self-test.
    • Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 
    1. Yes:  For DTC U0100:00, REFER to Diagnostic Routine AR .

      For all other Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), REFER to DTC CHART: INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) .

    2. No:  GO to on page 2.
  4. CARRY OUT THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
    1. Ignition ON.
    2. Using a scan tool, view the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
    3. Select the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) temperature gauge (ENGCOOLNT) Parameter Identification (PID).
      NOTE: Set the scan tool to 0 or full cold before beginning this step.
    4. Command the temperature gauge according to the tables:
    BASE INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)

    Scan Tool Command Gauge Position
    0% (-60 C (-76 F)-38 C (100 F)) Beginning of cold (C) (fill color blue)
    15% (59 C (138 F)) End of cold (C) (fill color blue)
    35% (79 C (174 F)) Just below the center of the gauge (mid-range, fill color gray)
    65% (120 C (248 F)) Just below the beginning of hot (H) (fill color gray)
    80% (121 C (250 F)) Just above hot (H) (fill color red)
    OPTIONAL INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)

    Scan Tool Command Gauge Position
    0% (24 C (76 F)-38 C (100 F)) Full cold (C)
    15% (59 C (138 F)) Beginning of the normal range
    45% (83 C (181 F)-109 C (228 F)) Center of the gauge
    85% (120 C (248 F)) End of the normal range
    95% (122 C (252 F)) Hot (H) (red line)
    • Does the temperature gauge operate according to the above specifications? 
    1. Yes:  GO to on page 3.
    2. No:  INSTALL a new Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). REFER to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) .
  5. CHECK THE Powertrain Control Module (PCM) TEMPERATURE Parameter Identification (PID)
NOTE: The coolant temperature should range between 0 C (32 F) and 59 C (138.1 F) with the gauge in the cold (C) range, between -60 C (-75.9 F) and 120 C (247.8 F) with the gauge in the normal or mid-range and above 121 C (249.6 F) with the gauge in the hot (H) range.
  1. Using a scan tool, view the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
  2. Ignition ON.
  3. Select the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) temperature Parameter Identification (PID) (Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT)). With the engine running, monitor the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) temperature Parameter Identification (PID).
  1. Yes:  The temperature gauge is operating correctly at this time.
  2. No:  INSTALL a new Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). REFER to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) .
