Pinpoint Test D: The Odometer Is Inoperative

  1. D1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND PCM SELF-TESTS 
    • Retrieve the recorded DTCs from the PCM continuous and on-demand self-tests.
    • Are any DTCs retrieved? 
    1. YES  : REFER to the INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE ENGINES to continue diagnosis of the DTCs.
    2. NO  : Go to  D2.
  2. D2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SELF-TESTS 
    • Retrieve the recorded DTCs from the instrument cluster continuous and on-demand self-tests.
    • Is DTC U0294 retrieved? 
    1. YES  : CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. If DTC U0294 is retrieved again, go to  D4 .

      For all other instrument cluster DTCs, REFER to the INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX .

    2. NO  : Go to  D3.
  3. D3 CHECK THE ODOMETER DISPLAY FOR CORRECT OPERATION 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command
    • Select the instrument cluster odometer display segment control active command and monitor the odometer display.
    • Do the odometer display segments illuminate? 
    1. YES  : Go to  D4.
    2. NO  : Go to  D5.
  4. D4 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
  5. D5 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
