Pinpoint Test C: Digital Transmission Range (Tr) Sensor

  1. C1 VERIFY DTCs 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Select PARK.
    • Carry out the On-Board Diagnostic Test. DTC codes P0705 and P0708 cannot be set by an incorrectly adjusted digital transmission range (TR) sensor.
    • Are only DTCs P0705, P0708 present? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C4.
    2. NO  : Go to  C2.
  2. C2 VERIFY DIGITAL TR SENSOR ALIGNMENT 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Select PARK.
    • Check to make sure the digital TR sensor harness connector is fully seated, terminals are fully engaged in connector and in good condition before proceeding.
    • Apply the parking brake.
    • Select NEUTRAL.
    • Disconnect the shift cable/linkage from the manual lever.
    • Verify that the Digital TR Sensor Alignment Tool fits in the appropriate slots.
    • Is the Digital TR Sensor correctly adjusted? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C3.
    2. NO  : ADJUST the Digital TR Sensor. REFER to Digital Transmission Range (TR) Sensor . PLACE the TR selector lever into PARK and CLEAR the DTCs. RERUN OBD Tests. Go to  C3.
  3. C3 VERIFY SELECTOR LEVER CABLE/LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT 
    • Place the manual lever in the OVERDRIVE position.
    • Select DRIVE.
    • Reconnect the selector lever cable/linkage.
    • Verify that the selector lever cable/linkage is correctly adjusted. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS .
    • Is the selector lever cable/linkage correctly adjusted?  
    1. YES  : Go to  C4.
    2. NO  : ADJUST the selector lever cable/linkage. REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS . Go to  C4.
  4. C4 CHECK ELECTRICAL SIGNAL OPERATION 
    • Select PARK.
    • Disconnect: Digital TR Sensor C167
      CAUTION: Do not pry on connector. This will damage the connector and result in a transmission concern.
    • Inspect both ends of the connector for damaged or pushed-out pins, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.
    • Is there damage to the connector, pins or harness? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR as required. CLEAR DTCs and RERUN OBD Tests.
    2. NO  : If diagnosing a DTC, go to  C5.

      If diagnosing a starting concern, four wheel drive (4WD) low engagement concern or a backup lamp concern, Go to  C6.

  5. C5 CHECK ELECTRICAL SYSTEM OPERATION (DIGITAL TR AND PCM) 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Connect: Digital TR Sensor C167
    • Key in ON position.
    • Access the transmission PIDs.
    • Move TR selector lever into each gear and stop.
    • Observe any of the following PIDs, TR, TR1, TR2, TR3, TR3_V, TR4 and TR_F while wiggling harness, tapping on sensor and/or driving the vehicle.
    • Compare the PIDs to the Digital Transmission Range (TR) Sensor Diagnosis Chart.
    • Do the PIDs TR, TR1, TR2, TR3, TR3_V and TR4 match the Digital Transmission Range (TR) Sensor Diagnosis Chart and do the PIDs remain steady when the harness is wiggled, the sensor is tapped or the vehicle is driven? 
    1. YES  : The problem is not in the digital TR sensor system. REFER to Diagnosis By Symptom  for further diagnosis.
    2. NO  : If the PIDs change when wiggling harness, tapping on the sensor or driving the vehicle, the problem may be intermittent.

      Go to  C7.

  6. C6 CHECK DIGITAL TR SENSOR OPERATION 
    • Disconnect: Digital TR Sensor C167

      CAUTION: Do not pry on connector. This will damage the connector and result in a transmission concern.
    • Measure the resistance between digital TR sensor pin 10 and pin 12, component side, with the selector lever in PARK and then NEUTRAL.

    • Measure the resistance between digital TR sensor pin 9 and pin 11, component side, with the selector lever in REVERSE.
    • Are all resistances less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Concern is not in the digital TR sensor. REFER to STARTING SYSTEM , FOUR WHEEL DRIVE (4WD) SYSTEMS or EXTERIOR LIGHTING .
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new digital TR sensor. CLEAR DTCs and REPEAT OBD Tests.
  7. C7 CHECK DIGITAL TR SENSOR OPERATION 
    • Disconnect: Digital TR Sensor C167

      CAUTION: Do not pry on connector. This will damage the connector and result in a transmission concern.
    • Measure the resistance between digital TR sensor pin 2 and pins 3, 4, 5 and 6, component side, with the selector lever in each position. Compare the measurements to the Digital Transmission Range (TR) Sensor Diagnosis Chart.
    • Do the measurements match Digital Transmission Range (TR) Sensor Diagnosis Chart? 
    1. YES  : Concern is not in the digital TR sensor, go to  C8.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new digital TR sensor. CLEAR DTCs and REPEAT OBD Tests.
  8. C8 CHECK PCM HARNESS CIRCUITS FOR OPENS 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: PCM C175T
    • Disconnect: Digital TR Sensor C167
      CAUTION: Do not pry the connector. This will damage the connector and result in a transmission concern.

    • Measure the resistance between PCM C175T-41, circuit RE406 (GY/VT), harness side and TR sensor C167-2, circuit RE406 (GY/VT), harness side.

    • Measure the resistance between PCM C175T-16, VET29 (VT/WH), harness side and TR sensor C167-4, VET29 (VT/WH), harness side.

    • Measure the resistance between PCM C175T-17, VET30 (YE), harness side and TR sensor C167-5, VET30 (YE), harness side.

    • Measure the resistance between PCM C175T-28, VET-31 (BU/OG), harness side and TR sensor C167-6, VET31 (BU/OG), harness side.

    • Measure the resistance between PCM C175T-27, VET 28 (GY/VT), harness side and TR sensor C167-3, VET28 (GY/VT), harness side.
    • Are all resistances less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C9.
    2. NO  : REPAIR open circuit(s). RECONNECT all components. CLEAR DTCs. RERUN OBD Tests.
  9. C9 CHECK PCM HARNESS CIRCUITS FOR SHORT TO GROUND OR POWER

    • Measure the resistance between PCM C175T-16, VET29 (VT/WH), harness side, PCM C175T-41, RE406 (GY/VT), harness side and ground.

    • Measure the resistance between PCM C175T-17, VET 30 (YE) harness side and PCM C175T-41, RE406 (GY/VT), harness side and ground.

    • Measure the resistance between PCM C175T-27, VET28 (GY/VT) harness side and PCM C175T-41, RE406 (GY/VT) harness side and ground.

    • Measure the resistance between PCM C175T-28, VET31 (BU/OG) harness side and PCM C175T-41, RE406 (GY/VT) harness side and ground.
    • Are all resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C9.
    2. NO  : REPAIR short circuit(s). RECONNECT all components. CLEAR DTCs. RERUN OBD Tests.
  10. C10 CHECK FOR SHORT BETWEEN TR/PCM INPUT SIGNAL CIRCUITS

    • Measure the resistance between PCM C175T-16, VET29 (VT/WH) harness side and PCM C175T pin 17, circuit VET30 (YE), pin 27, circuit VET28 (GY/VT) and pin 28, circuit VET31 (BU/OG).

    • Measure the resistance between PCM C175T-17, VET30 (YE) harness side and PCM C175T pin 27, circuit VET28, (GY/VT) and pin 28, circuit VET31 (BU/OG).

    • Measure the resistance between PCM C175T-27, circuit VET28 (GY/VT) and C175T-28, circuit VET31 (BU/OG).
    • Are all the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new PCM. RECONNECT all components. CLEAR DTCs and RERUN OBD Tests.
    2. NO  : REPAIR shorts on circuits having less than 10,000 ohms between other TR/PCM input signal circuits. RECONNECT all components. CLEAR DTCs and RERUN OBD Tests.
