Inspection and Verification: Notes

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.
    VISUAL INSPECTION CHART

    Mechanical Electrical
    • Engine oil level
    • Door adjustment
    • Engine coolant level
    • Fuel tank
    • Fuel evaporative system
    • Tire size
    • Smart junction box (SJB) fuse(s):
      • 7 (10A)
      • 22 (10A)
      • 28 (10A)
    • Miniature bulb(s)
    • Circuitry
    • Instrument cluster
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  4. If the concern is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • check that the program card is correctly installed.
    • check the connections to the vehicle.
    • check the ignition switch position.
  5. If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating manual.
  6. Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:

If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX , the SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX , or the POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX . For all other DTCs, refer to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES .
  8. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to SYMPTOM CHART .

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX

DTC Description Source Action
B1202 Fuel Sender Circuit Open Instrument Cluster GO to PINPOINT TEST B .
B1204 Fuel Sender Circuit Short to Ground Instrument Cluster GO to PINPOINT TEST B .
B1205 EIC Switch Number 1 Assembly Circuit Failure Instrument Cluster CHECK select/reset button for binding and sticking. If OK, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
B1317 Battery Voltage High Instrument Cluster REFER to CHARGING SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION to continue diagnosis of the charging system.
B1318 Battery Voltage Low Instrument Cluster REFER to CHARGING SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION to continue diagnosis of the charging system.
B1342 ECU is Defective Instrument Cluster CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. If DTC B1342 is retrieved again. INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
U1900 CAN Communication Bus Fault Instrument Cluster REFER to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK for information on the CAN.

SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX

B1319 Driver Door (LF) Ajar Switch Circuit Failure SJB REFER to INTERIOR LIGHTING .
B1327 Passenger Door (RF) Ajar Circuit Failure SJB REFER to INTERIOR LIGHTING .
B1335 Door Ajar (RR) Switch Circuit Failure SJB REFER to INTERIOR LIGHTING .
B1571 Door Ajar (LR) Switch Circuit Failure SJB REFER to INTERIOR LIGHTING .
B2477 Module Configuration Failure SJB REFER to MODULE CONFIGURATION for information on module configuration.
C1769 Park Brake Switch/Circuit Short to Ground SJB GO to PINPOINT TEST I .
U1900 CAN Communication Bus Fault SJB REFER to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK for information on the CAN.

POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX

P0457 Fuel Fill Cap Off PCM Refer to INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE article for Escape (gasoline) and Mariner or INTRODUCTION- HYBRID ESCAPE article for Escape (Hybrid) to continue diagnosis.
