Recommended Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Ford Pickup, 2003 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2003 Ford F450 Super Duty, 2003 Ford Excursion, and 2003 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using scan tool, access VPWR PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. See ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 6.0L DIESEL article. Crank engine while monitoring VPWR PID reading. See PID PARAMETERS  table. If VPWR PID reading indicates a voltage concern, check charging circuit, power and ground circuits. See TEST A: VEHICLE BATTERY under SYSTEM TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 6.0L DIESEL article.

PID PARAMETERS

PID Specification
VPWR (1) 8 Volt Minimum
RPM (2) 100 RPM Minimum
ICP (3) 500 PSI (3.5 mPa) Minimum
Fuel PW (4) 1-6 mS
(1) If indicating a low voltage condition, check battery, charging system or power and ground circuits to the PCM. See TEST A: VEHICLE BATTERY under SYSTEM TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - DIESEL - 6.0L article.
(2) Low RPM could be an indication of starting/charging system problems. No RPM indicated with the engine cranking could be CMP/CKP circuit fault, check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - DIESEL - 6.0L article.
(3) A minimum of 500 psi (3.5 mPa) is required before the injectors are enabled. No or low oil in the system, faulty IPR or high pressure pump could cause pressure loss. See TEST 10C: MONITOR ICP PID WHILE CRANKING  for a detailed description on how to perform this test. Note If a no RPM Signal is received, IPR duty cycle will default to 14 percent.
(4) Even though a 1 to 6 mS Fuel PW is shown on the scan tool to be sent to the FICM, it is possible that the FICM did not receive the signal.
