Test I: Tachometer Reads Incorrectly

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below center of instrument panel, right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform self-diagnostics. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM . If DTC U1027 is retrieved, see appropriate article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If any other instrument cluster DTCs were retrieved, go to HYBRID ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX . If no related DTCs were retrieved, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester, select instrument cluster tachometer active command. Trigger, observe and scroll tachometer at 10% increments. Tachometer should increase approximately 600 RPM with every 10% increment increase. If tachometer operates as specified, diagnose Clean Tach Out (CTO) circuit. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Repair as necessary. If tachometer does not operate as specified, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check for corrosion, pushed out pins and harness connectors that are not connected correctly. Repair any damage found and reconnect any loose harness connectors. Retest system operation. If problem does not exist, system is operating correctly at this time. Clear any DTCs. If problem exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
