Test F: Engine Temperature Gauge Reads Incorrectly
NOTE:
Ensure engine coolant is at proper level and that Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sender 2-pin harness connector C1064 is securely attached.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below center of instrument panel, right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform self-diagnostics. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM . If DTC U1073 is retrieved, see appropriate article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If any other instrument cluster DTCs were retrieved, go to HYBRID ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX table. If no related DTCs were retrieved, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester, select instrument cluster engine coolant active command. Trigger, observe and scroll engine coolant at 0 %, 50% and 100%. Temperature gauge should indicate below cold with 0 %, half with 50% and full hot with 100%. If temperature gauge operates as specified, go to next step (diesel engines only) or see appropriate article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE (gasoline only). If temperature gauge does not operate as specified, go to step 7.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove instrument cluster to gain access to instrument cluster harness connectors. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C220c. Disconnect engine coolant temperature sensor C1064. Measure resistance in Yellow/Red wire between instrument cluster harness connector C220c terminal No. 6 and engine coolant temperature sensor harness connector C1064 terminal No. 2. See Figure and Fig 1 . Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220c terminal No. 6 (Yellow/Red wire). Resistance should be greater than 10 k/ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open or short to ground in Yellow/Red wire and test system operation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220c terminal No. 6 (Yellow/Red wire). If any voltage is present, repair short to power in Yellow/Red wire and test system operation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If no voltage is present, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Remove instrument cluster to gain access to instrument cluster harness connectors. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C220c. Disconnect engine coolant temperature sensor C1064. Measure resistance in Red/White wire between instrument cluster harness connector C220c terminal No. 7 and engine coolant temperature sensor harness connector C1064 terminal No. 1. See Figure and Fig 1 . Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220c terminal No. 7 (Red/White wire). Resistance should be greater than 10 k/ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open or short to ground in Red/White wire and test system operation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220c terminal No. 7 (Red/White wire). If any voltage is present, repair short to power in Red/White wire and test system operation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If no voltage is present, replace engine coolant temperature sensor. See ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR (DIESEL ONLY) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check for corrosion, pushed out pins and harness connectors that are not connected correctly. Repair any damage found and reconnect any loose harness connectors. Retest system operation. If problem does not exist, system is operating correctly at this time. Clear any DTCs. If problem exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
