Test E: Oil Pressure Gauge Reads Incorrectly

NOTE: For proper operation of oil gauge, ensure oil is at correct level and oil pressure sending unit harness connector is securely attached. Ensure engine to chassis and engine to bulkhead ground straps are securely fastened. A momentary drop in oil pressure during hard braking is normal.
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below center of instrument panel, right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform self-diagnostics. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM . If DTC C1284 is retrieved, replace oil pressure sending unit and test system operation. If any other instrument cluster DTCs were retrieved, go to HYBRID ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table. If no related DTCs were retrieved, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester, select instrument cluster oil pressure gauge active command. Trigger, observe and scroll oil pressure gauge at 0 %, 50% and 100%. Oil pressure gauge should indicate below L (low) with 0 %, half with 50% and H (high) with 100%. If oil pressure gauge operates as specified, go to next step. If oil pressure gauge does not operate as specified, go to step  6.
  3. Check engine oil pressure with a manual gauge. If engine oil pressure is okay, go to next step. If engine oil pressure is not okay, repair engine lubrication mechanical problem to correct oil pressure concern.
  4. Remove instrument cluster to gain access to instrument cluster harness connectors. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C220c. Disconnect oil pressure sending unit 1-pin harness connector C103. Measure resistance of White/Red wire between oil pressure sending unit 1-pin harness connector C103 and instrument cluster harness connector C220c terminal No. 8. Measure resistance between instrument cluster harness connector C220c terminal No. 8 (Red/White wire) and ground. See Figure. If resistance is 5 ohms or less between connectors and greater than 10 k/ohms between instrument cluster and ground, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms between connectors and/or less than 10 k/ohms between instrument cluster and ground, repair open or short to ground in White/Red wire between instrument cluster and oil pressure sending unit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
  5. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between instrument cluster harness connector C220c terminal No. 8 (White/Red wire) and ground. If any voltage is present, repair short to voltage in Red/White wire and test system operation. If no voltage is present, replace oil pressure sending unit. See OIL PRESSURE SENDING UNIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check for corrosion, pushed out pins and harness connectors that are not connected correctly. Repair any damage found and reconnect any loose harness connectors. Retest system operation. If problem does not exist, system is operating correctly at this time. Clear any DTCs. If problem exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
