Test N: Charge System Warning Indicator Inoperative

  1. Check Central Junction Box (CJB) fuse No. 29 (5-amp). If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is not okay, replace fuse. Retest system operation. If fuse blows again, repair short to ground in White/Yellow wire between instrument cluster and CJB. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect generator 3-pin harness connector 153A (gasoline) or C185 (diesel). Connect a 10-amp jumper wire between ground and generator 3-pin harness connector 153A terminal No. 1 or C185 terminal No. 3 (Light Green/Red wire). If charging system warning indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. If charging system warning indicator illuminates, check charging system. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove instrument cluster to gain access to charging system warning indicator bulb. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . Remove bulb. Check bulb continuity. If bulb is okay, go to next step. If bulb is not okay, replace bulb. Retest system operation.
  4. Disconnect instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C250A. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C250A terminal No. 7 (White/Yellow wire). See Figure. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in White/Yellow wire between instrument cluster and central junction box. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance of Light Green/Red wire between instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C250A terminal No. 8 and generator 3-pin harness connector 153A (gasoline) terminal No. 3 or C185 (diesel) terminal No. 1. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace instrument cluster. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . Retest system operation. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Light Green/Red wire between instrument cluster and generator. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
