Test Ah: Incorrect Fuel Gauge Reading In Alternative Fuel & Gasoline Mode (Bi-Fuel Only)

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect alternative fuel intercept 16-pin in-line connector C4302. Alternative fuel intercept 16-pin in-line connector C4302 is located below center of vehicle, near fuel tank. Disconnect fuel tank assembly 16-pin harness connector C1045. Connect gasoline fuel tank assembly C1045 (component side) to alternative fuel intercept 16-pin in-line connector C4302. Toggle alternative fuel mode select switch to gasoline mode. If fuel gauge functions correctly, go to next step. If fuel gauge does not function correctly, go to step  4.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect compuvalve 64-pin harness connector C4025. Compuvalve is located in left rear of engine compartment, on top of engine. Measure resistance between compuvalve 64-pin harness connector C4025 terminal No. 43 (White wire) and alternative fuel pump intercept 16-pin in-line connector C4302 terminal No. 4 (Dark Blue wire). See Figure and Figure . Measure resistance between ground and compuvalve 64-pin harness connector C4025 terminal No. 43 (White wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or less between compuvalve 64-pin harness connector C4025 and alternative fuel pump intercept 16-pin in-line connector C4302, or more than 10 k/ohms between ground and compuvalve 64-pin harness connector C4025, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms between compuvalve 64-pin harness connector C4025 and alternative fuel pump intercept 16-pin in-line connector C4302 and less than 10 k/ohms between ground and compuvalve 64-pin harness connector C4025, repair open or short to ground in White wire between compuvalve and fuel tank assembly. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and compuvalve 64-pin harness connector C4025 terminal No. 43 (White wire). If battery voltage is present, repair short to power in White wire between instrument cluster and compuvalve. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation. If battery voltage is not present, replace compuvalve. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Retest system operation.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove instrument cluster to gain access to instrument cluster harness connectors. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C250B. Disconnect alternative fuel intercept 16-pin in-line connector C4302. Measure resistance of Yellow/White wire between instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C250B terminal No. 7 and alternative fuel intercept 16-pin in-line connector C4302 terminal No. 4. See Figure and Figure . Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C250B terminal No. 7 (Yellow/White wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or less between instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C250B and alternative fuel pump intercept 16-pin in-line connector C4302, and more than 10 k/ohms between ground and instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C250B, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms between instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C250B and alternative fuel pump intercept 16-pin in-line connector C4302, or less than 10 k/ohms between ground and instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C250B, repair Yellow/White wire for an open or short to ground between instrument cluster and fuel tank assembly. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
  5. Turn ignition to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C250B terminal No. 7 (Yellow/White wire). If battery voltage is present, repair short to power in Yellow/White wire between instrument cluster and fuel tank assembly. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation. If battery voltage is not present, replace instrument cluster. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . Retest system operation.
