Test X: Message Center Outside Temperature Display Operates Incorrectly

  1. Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester, perform Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) self-tests. If no DTCs were retrieved, go to next step. If DTC U1041, U1073 or U1123 were retrieved, or NO RESP/NOT EQUIP is displayed, repair module communications concern. See MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - WINDSTAR article.
  2. Using NGS tester, perform Front Electronics Module (FEM) self-test. If DTC B1254 is retrieved, go to next step. If any other DTCs were retrieved, perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See FRONT ELECTRONIC MODULE DTC INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no DTCs were retrieved, go to step  6.
  3. Disconnect ambient temperature sensor 2-pin harness connector C182 and FEM 22-pin harness connector C191. Measure resistance between FEM harness connector C191 terminal No. 2 (Red/Light Blue wire) and ambient temperature sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 (Red/Light Blue wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red/Light Blue wire.
  4. Measure resistance between FEM harness connector C191 terminal No. 9 (Light Blue/Orange wire) and ambient temperature sensor harness connector C182 terminal No. 1 (Light Blue/Orange wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Blue/Orange wire.
  5. Measure voltage between FEM harness connector C191 terminals No. 9 (Light Blue/Orange wire) and No. 2 (Red/Light Blue wire) and ground. If voltage is present at either terminal, repair short to voltage in Light Blue/Orange wire and/or Red/Light Blue wire. If voltage is not present at both terminals, replace ambient temperature sensor.
  6. Measure resistance between FEM harness connector C191 terminal No. 2 (Red/Light Blue wire) and ambient temperature sensor harness connector C182 terminal No. 2 (Red/Light Blue wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red/Light Blue wire.
  7. Measure resistance between FEM harness connector C191 terminal No. 9 (Light Blue/Orange wire) and ambient temperature sensor harness connector C182 terminal No. 1 (Light Blue/Orange wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Blue/Orange wire
  8. Measure resistance between FEM harness connector C191 terminal No. 2 (Red/Light Blue wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Red/Light Blue wire.
  9. Measure voltage between FEM harness connector C191 terminal No. 2 (Red/Light Blue wire) and ground. If voltage is not present, reconnect FEM and ambient temperature sensor and go to next step. If voltage is present, repair short to voltage in Red/Light Blue wire.
  10. Using NGS tester, select and monitor FEM PID EXTTEMP. If FEM PID EXTTEMP agrees with outside air temperature, replace FEM. If FEM PID EXTTEMP does not agree with outside air temperature, replace ambient temperature sensor.
