Test E: Incorrect Temperature Gauge Indication

  1. Using NGS tester, perform instrument cluster self-test. If no DTCs were retrieved, go to next step. If DTC U1073 was retrieved, repair coolant temperature sensor input circuit. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. For all other instrument cluster DTC, perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DTC INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using NGS tester, select instrument cluster ENGINE COOLANT CONTROL active command. Trigger ENGCOOLANT active command. Monitor engine coolant temperature gauge while adjusting ENGCOOLANT active command to read 50% and 100%. If engine coolant temperature gauge needle started at cold, moved to half at 50% and then moved to full hot at 100%, repair coolant temperature sensor input circuit. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If gauge did not perform correctly, replace instrument cluster.
