Possible Causes

An incorrect vehicle identification code could be caused by an RCM installed on wrong vehicle, an incorrectly programmed RCM or vehicle identification wiring not connected as expected.

1. Check for hard or intermittent DTC
   
   Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See USING SCAN TOOL  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Retrieve and record any continuous DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform on-demand self-test. See ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC C1414 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, fault is hard. Go to next step. If DTC C1414 was not retrieved, fault is intermittent. Go to step  6 .
   NOTE: For this vehicle application, RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 10 should have no connection.
2. Check vehicle identification pin No. 1
   
   Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access and disconnect RCM connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect RCM harness connector C310A, terminal No. 10. See Figure . Terminal cavity should be empty (no wire attached). If terminal No. 10 does not have wire attached, go to next step. If terminal No. 10 has wire attached, determine cause of incorrect vehicle harness configuration and repair as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  5 .
   NOTE: For this vehicle application, RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 13 should be ignition voltage.
3. Check vehicle identification pin No. 2
   
   Disconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure resistance between RCM harness connector C310A, terminals No. 13 (Pink/Orange wire) and No. 2 (Pink/Orange wire). See Figure . If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Pink/Orange wire (circuit No. 20-JA10B). Go to step  5 . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
   NOTE: For this vehicle application, RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 14 should be connected to ground.
4. Check vehicle identification pin No. 3
   
   Turn igniting switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between ground and RCM harness connector C310A, terminals No. 14 (Black/Red wire). See Figure . If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Red wire (circuit No. 31-JA10B). Go to step  7 . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
5. Check RCM programmed vehicle identification
   
   Using scan tool, select PID/DATA MONITOR AND RECORD. Select PID VEHID. If VID #1 is OPEN CIRCUIT, VID #2 is IGNITION and VID #3 is ground, go to next step. If VID #1 is not OPEN CIRCUIT, VID #2 is not IGNITION and VID #3 is not ground, replace RCM and go to step  7 .
6. Check for intermittent fault
   
   Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Perform on-demand self-test. If DTC C1414 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, go to step  2 . If DTC C1414 was not retrieved during on-demand self-test, check for cause of intermittent open circuit in air bag wiring harness. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Attempt to recreate fault by flexing wire harness and cycling ignition switch frequently. Repair any intermittent problems found. Go to next step.
7. Check for additional DTCs
   
   Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step  1 . If any continuous DTCs were retrieved, go to diagnostic trouble code identification table for direction to appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) IDENTIFICATION  table. DO NOT clear any DTCs until all DTCs have been resolved. If no DTCs were retrieved, reconnect air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Clear all DTCs. See CLEARING FAULT CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS.
