Test Z: Seat Belt Warning Chime Does Not Operate Properly

  1. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Monitor Generic Electronic Module (GEM) PIDs IGN_KEY, IGN_S, IGN_R and IGN_A while cycling ignition switch through all position. If PIDs agree with ignition switch position, go to next step. If PIDs does not agree with ignition switch position, perform TEST V: KEY-IN-IGNITION WARNING CHIME DOES NOT OPERATE PROPERLY  .
  2. Using NGS tester, monitor GEM PID D_SBELT while buckling and unbuckling driver's seat belt. If PID agrees with seat belt position, go to next step. If PID does not agree with seat belt position, go to step  5 .
  3. Using NGS tester, select GEM active command CHIME. Trigger CHIME active command on and off. If chime operates properly, go to next step. If chime does not operate properly, go to step  11 .
  4. Cycle ignition switch from OFF to RUN position while monitoring seat belt indicator in instrument cluster. If seat belt indicator operates properly, go to step  11 . If seat belt indicator does not operate properly, perform TEST I: SAFETY BELT INDICATOR IS INOPERATIVE (CHIME IS OPERATIVE)/DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY  .
  5. Using NGS tester, monitor GEM PID D_SBELT while buckling and unbuckling driver's seat belt. If PID always indicate OUT, go to next step. If PID does not always indicate OUT, go to step  8 .
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect driver's seat belt switch harness connector C315. Using NGS tester, monitor GEM PID D_SBELT. If PID does not indicate IN, go to next step. If PID indicates IN, replace driver's seat belt switch.
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect GEM harness connector C293. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 8 (Brown/Light Blue wire) at GEM harness connector C293. See Figure . If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to step  11 . If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Brown/Light Blue wire.
  8. Disconnect driver's seat belt switch harness connector C315. Using a fused jumper wire, ground Brown/Light Blue wire terminal at driver's seat belt switch harness connector C315. Using NGS tester, monitor GEM PID D_SBELT. If PID does not indicate OUT, go to next step. If PID indicates OUT, go to step  10 .
  9. Disconnect GEM harness connector C293. Measure resistance in Brown/Light Blue wire between driver's seat belt switch harness connector C315 and terminal No. 8 at GEM harness connector C293. See Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to step  11 . If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Brown/Light Blue wire.
  10. Measure resistance between ground and Black wire terminal at driver's seat belt switch harness connector C315. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace driver's seat belt switch. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire.
  11. Disconnect all GEM harness connectors. Inspect connectors for pushed out pins or corrosion. Reconnect all GEM harness connectors, ensuring they are correctly connected. Operate system and verify is concern is still present. If concern is still present, replace GEM. If concern is not present, system is okay at this time.
