Test E: Excessive Fuel Odor: Mustang

  1. Evaporative Emission System Leak Test -  Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes, go to next step. If system does not pass, go to step  3.
  2. Testing Evaporative Emission Running Loss System Monitor

    Perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. If any PCM DTCs P0442, P0455, P1443 or P1450 are retrieved, see EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  table under SYSTEM TESTS for appropriate test procedure. If any other PCM DTCs are retrieved, see SYSTEM TESTS  for appropriate test procedure. If no PCM DTCs are retrieved, see EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYMPTOMS  table.
  3. Testing For Location Of Leak

    Connect Evaporative Emissions System Leak Tester (134-00056) or equivalent to evaporative emissions test port. Disconnect fuel vapor control valve tube from under vehicle fuel supply and vapor return tube assembly. Plug both tube open ends. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). If pressure drops immediately, go to next step. If pressure does not drop immediately, go to step  9.
  4. Testing Vapor Hose From Fuel Tank To Under Vehicle Fuel Supply & Vapor Return Tube Assembly

    Disconnect fuel vapor return tube from under vehicle fuel supply and vapor return tube assembly. Plug fuel supply and vapor return tube assembly. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). If pressure drops immediately, go to next step. If pressure does not drop immediately, replace fuel vapor return hose. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS.
  5. Testing Fuel Supply & Vapor Return Tube Assembly

    Disconnect fuel supply and vapor return tube assembly from canister purge outlet tube. Plug EVAP canister purge outlet tube. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). If pressure drops immediately, go to next step. If pressure does not drop immediately, replace fuel supply and vapor return tube assembly. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS.
  6. Testing Evaporative Emissions Test Port

    Disconnect and plug evaporative emissions test port tube from EVAP canister purge outlet tube. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). If pressure drops immediately, replace evaporative emissions test port. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. If pressure does not drop immediately, reconnect all components and go to next step.
  7. Testing EVAP Canister Purge Outlet Tube

    Disconnect and plug EVAP canister purge outlet tube from EVAP canister. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). If pressure drops immediately, replace EVAP canister purge outlet tube. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. If pressure does not drop immediately, reconnect all components and go to next step.
  8. Testing EVAP Canister Purge Valve

    Disconnect evaporative emission return tube from EVAP canister purge valve. Plug EVAP canister purge valve. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). If pressure drops immediately, replace EVAP canister purge valve. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. If pressure does not drop immediately, replace evaporative emissions return tube. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS.
  9. Testing Venting Portion Of EVAP System For Blockage

    Reconnect all components. Move EVAP Tester to fuel filler pipe. Using scan tool, close canister vent solenoid. Select OUTPUT TEST MODE, FTP and VPID. Select ALL OFF mode. Press START button on scan tool to close canister vent solenoid. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). Open canister vent solenoid. If pressure drops immediately, go to step  14. If pressure does not drop immediately, go to next step.
  10. Testing Fresh Air Vent Hose For Blockage

    Disconnect fresh air vent hose from fuel filler pipe inside trunk. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). If pressure drops immediately, replace fresh air vent hose. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. If pressure does not drop immediately, go to next step.
  11. Testing Fresh Air Vent Hose At Fuel Filler Pipe For Blockage

    Disconnect fresh air vent hose at fuel filler pipe. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). If pressure drops immediately, replace fuel filler pipe. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. If pressure does not drop immediately, go to next step.
  12. Testing Tank Vapor Valve Tube Assembly For Blockage

    Disconnect tank vapor valve tube assembly fresh air tube from canister vent solenoid vent hose. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). If pressure drops immediately, replace tank vapor valve assembly fresh air tube. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. If pressure does not drop immediately, go to next step.
  13. Testing Canister Vent Solenoid Hose Assembly For Blockage

    Disconnect canister vent solenoid hose assembly. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). If pressure drops immediately, replace canister vent solenoid hose assembly. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. If pressure does not drop immediately, replace canister vent solenoid. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS.
  14. Testing EVAP Canister For Leak

    Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes, EVAP system diagnosis is complete. Go to step  18. If system does not pass, go to next step.
  15. Testing EVAP Canister Vent Solenoid For Leak

    Disconnect canister vent solenoid from EVAP canister and plug canister. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system does not pass, go to next step. If system passes, replace canister vent solenoid. Reconnect all components. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. If system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS.
  16. Testing EVAP Canister

    Disconnect EVAP canister inlet elbow tube and plug tube. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system does not pass, go to next step. If system passes, replace EVAP canister. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. If system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS.
  17. Testing EVAP Canister Inlet Elbow Tube

    Disconnect fuel vapor valve tube assembly from EVAP canister inlet elbow tube. Plug fuel vapor valve tube assembly. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes, replace EVAP canister inlet elbow tube. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. If system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. If system does not pass, replace fuel vapor valve tube assembly. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. If system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS.
  18. Testing Fuel Filler Pipe Grommet

    Reconnect all components. Move EVAP Tester to fuel filler pipe. Using scan tool, close canister vent solenoid. Select OUTPUT TEST MODE, FTP and VPID. Select ALL OFF mode. Press START button on scan tool to close canister vent solenoid. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). If pressure drops, repair fuel filler pipe as necessary. Repeat step. If pressure does not drop, perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS.
