Test F: Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

  1. Electronic Diagnostics

Inspect condition of TSS sensor harness and component connector. Repair as necessary. Go to next step.
  2. Transaxle Drive Cycle Test

Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin connector, and inspect for damaged terminals, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Disconnect TSS sensor harness connector. On 2.5L engines, measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 84 and TSS sensor harness connector positive terminal (White/Violet wire). On 2.0L engines, measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 34 and TSS sensor harness connector positive terminal (White/Violet wire). On all models, measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 33 and TSS sensor harness connector negative terminal (Brown/White wire). If each resistance reading is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If either resistance reading is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Connect all components. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. Repeat QUICK TEST  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  3. Check Continuity Of TSS Or OSS Circuits

On 2.0L engines, measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 34 and test pins No. 71 and 97. On 2.5L engines, measure and record resistance between breakout box test pins No. 58 or 84 and test pins No. 71 and 97. On all models, measure and record resistance between breakout box test pins No. 33 or 76 and test pins No. 71 and 97. On 2.0L engines, measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 34 and test pins No. 24, 51, 76, 77 and 103. On 2.5L engines, measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 84 and test pins No. 24, 51, 76, 77 and 103. On all models, if any resistance reading is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Connect all components. Disconnect breakout box and repeat QUICK TEST  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. If each resistance reading is 10 k/ohms or more, go to next step.
  4. Check TSS Or OSS Circuits For Short To Power And Ground

Connect PCM 104-pin connector. Ensure TSS sensor harness connector is disconnected. Connect transmission tester to TSS sensor component connector. Connect voltmeter leads to appropriate tester TSS sensor jacks. Set voltmeter to 20-volt AC scale. Perform drive cycle test. See TRANSMISSION DRIVE CYCLE TEST  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. If voltage increases with vehicle speed, replace PCM. Connect all components. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. Repeat QUICK TEST  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. If voltage does not increase with vehicle speed, go to next step.
  5. TSS Or OSS Functional Test

Connect ohmmeter leads to appropriate transmission tester TSS sensor jacks. If resistance is 140-290 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 140-290 ohms, replace TSS sensor. Repeat step  4.
  6. Check Resistance Of TSS Or OSS Sensor

Check for continuity between transmission tester TSS sensor jacks and tester BAT(-) jack. If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, replace TSS sensor. Repeat step  4.
  7. Check TSS Magnetism

Remove TSS sensor from transaxle. See FORD CD4E (MAZDA LA4A-EL) OVERHAUL article. Determine if TSS sensor is magnetically attracted to ferrous metal. If TSS sensor acts like a magnet, go to next step. If TSS sensor does not stick to ferrous metal surface, replace TSS sensor. Repeat step  4.
  8. Check Exciter Wheel

With TSS sensor removed, inspect condition of exciter wheel. Rotate engine with remote starter switch and ensure all 4 teeth of exciter wheel are not damaged. Replace exciter wheel if any teeth are damaged. See FORD CD4E (MAZDA LA4A-EL) OVERHAUL article. If exciter wheel is not damaged, replace TSS sensor. Repeat step  4.
