Test D: Excessive Fuel Odor

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mercury Villager. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: After each service or repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components and perform DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES under QUICK TEST in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - VILLAGER article. Clear DTCs and repeat QUICK TEST procedures to ensure all EEC-V systems are working properly and DTCs are no longer present.
NOTE: Enter this test only when all steps under QUICK TEST have been successfully completed and excessive fuel odor still exists or if directed here from another test or chart.

  1. 1) Test For Restricted EVAP Emission System From Test Port Through Canister Vent Control Solenoid

Connect EVAP Emission Leak Tester (134-00056) to EVAP emissions test port. Attempt to pressurize EVAP system. If pressure drops immediately, go to next step. If pressure does not drop immediately, go to TEST A: DTC P0440: SMALL LEAK DETECTED IN EVAP SYSTEM under SYSTEM TESTS (EVAPORATIVE EMISSION) in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - VILLAGER article.
  2. 2) Test For Restricted EVAP Emission System Between Fuel Filler Pipe & Canister Vent Control Solenoid

Connect EVAP emission leak tester to fuel filler neck. Attempt to pressurize EVAP system. If pressure drops immediately, perform EVAP EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes leak test, go to EVAP EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE . If pressure does not drop immediately, replace vacuum cut valve. Repeat this step to verify repairs and perform EVAP EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes leak test, go to EVAP EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE .
