Removal & Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis, 2002 Lincoln Town Car, and 2002 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Relieve fuel system pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE . Drain fuel tank. Remove fuel tank filler pipe screws. Raise and support vehicle.
  2. Remove fuel tank filler pipe from fuel tank. Disconnect fuel pump harness connector which is located above No. 4 crossmember. Disconnect fuel lines. See FUEL LINE CONNECTOR . Disconnect vapor tube from tee on right side of vehicle. Disconnect vapor tube from canister tube. Support fuel tank. Remove fuel tank support strap nuts and swing fuel tank support straps away from fuel tank. Lower fuel tank. Remove and discard fuel tank mounting studs.
  3. NOTE: If tank is being replaced, the vapor control valve and fuel pressure transducer can be reused on the new tank.
  4. Position fuel tank in the vehicle. Position fuel tank support strap, install NEW studs and tighten NEW stud nuts. Break off the stud shanks. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Connect the fuel lines, making sure to connect the supply line first. The supply line has a label on it and is the upper line. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Perform leak check and monitor procedure. See AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE  under EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEMS.
