Inspection and Verification

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Ford RV Cutaway, 2005 Ford Econoline, and 2005 Ford E450 Super Duty. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Verify the customer concern.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.
    VISUAL INSPECTION CHART

    Mechanical Electrical
    • Engine oil filter
    • Vehicle speed sensor (VSS) gear
    • Engine oil level
    • Temperature gauge needle
    • Oil pressure gauge needle
    • Fuel filler cap
    • Central junction box (CJB) fuse(s):
      • 14 (5A)
      • 15 (5A)
      • 22 (15A)
    • Battery junction box (BJB) fuse(s):
      • 7 (60A)
      • 22 (60A)
    • Circuitry
    • VSS
    • Output shaft speed sensor (OSS)
    • Powertrain control module (PCM)
    • Instrument cluster
    • Fuel level sender
    • Oil pressure switch
    • Engine air filter sensor
    • Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
    • Anti-lock brake system (ABS) module

  3. Verify the following systems are working correctly:
    • Charging system
    • Fuel system
    • Engine oiling system
    • Engine cooling system
    • Vehicle speed control system

If the system(s) are not working correctly, refer to the appropriate article.

  4. Check the wiring harness for obvious signs of shorts, opens, bad connections, or damage.
  5. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • Check that the program card is correctly installed.
    • Check the connections to the vehicle.
    • Check the ignition switch position.
  6. If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating manual.
  7. Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
    • CAN or ISO circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK .
    • No response/not equipped for the instrument cluster, GO to PINPOINT TEST A .
    • System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs, and carry out self-test diagnostics for the instrument cluster.
  8. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX .
  9. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to SYMPTOM CHART .
