Test Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Ford Pickup Heritage. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. AA1 CHECK THE PCM FOR DTCS
NOTE: Verify the inertia fuel shutoff (IFS) switch is set (button pushed in). Refer to the vehicle Owner Literature for location.
    • Key off.
    • ALT fuel switch in GAS mode.
    • Connect the scan tool.
    • Key on, engine off.
    • Access the PCM.
    • Carry out the PCM self-tests.

    Are Any PCM DTCS Present?

    Yes No
REFER to the base vehicle POWERTRAIN DTC CHARTS & DESCRIPTIONS - CNG, FLEXFUEL & GASOLINE for Powertrain Diagnostic Trouble Codes. GO to  AA2.
  2. AA2 CHECK THE AFCM FOR DTCS
NOTE: For no communication with the AFCM, GO to Pinpoint Test U .
    • Access the AFCM.
    • Carry out the AFCM self-test.

    Are Any AFCM DTCS Present?

    Yes No
For AFCM DTCs, REFER to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHARTS . GO to  AA3.
  3. AA3 CHECK THE GASOLINE RELAY FOR VOLTAGE
    • Key off.
    • Disconnect the gasoline relay C1218.
    • Key on, engine off.
    • Access the PCM
    • Command the fuel pump on.
    • Measure the voltage between the gasoline relay C1218 pin 30, harness side and ground.

Is The Voltage Greater Than 10 Volts?

    Yes No
GO to  AA5. GO to  AA4.
  4. AA4 CHECK THE PCM FUEL PUMP CIRCUIT
    • Command the fuel pump off.
    • Key off.
    • Disconnect the PCM fuel pump relay C1051.
    • Measure the resistance between the PCM fuel pump relay C1051 pin 87, harness side and the gasoline relay C1218, pin 30 harness side.

Is The Resistance Less Than 5 Ohms?

    Yes No
REFER to the base vehicle INTRODUCTION - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE to continue diagnosis of the PCM fuel pump relay. Repair the circuit.
  5. AA5 CHECK THE GASOLINE INJECTOR VPWR CIRCUIT
    • Command the fuel pump off.
    • Key off.
NOTE: Check at least one fuel injector on each bank.
    • Disconnect two gasoline injectors.
    • Key on, engine off.
    • Measure the voltage between the right bank gasoline injector VPWR circuit, harness side and ground; and between the left bank gasoline injector VPWR circuit, harness side and ground.

Are The Voltages Greater Than 10 Volts?

    Yes No
GO to  AA6. REPAIR the circuit in question.
  6. AA6 CHECK THE GASOLINE INJECTOR DRIVER CIRCUIT
NOTE: Check at least one fuel injector on each bank.
    • Connect a test lamp between the right bank gasoline injector VPWR circuit, harness side and the right bank gasoline injector driver circuit, harness side; and between the left bank gasoline injector VPWR circuit, harness side and the left bank gasoline injector driver circuit, harness side.
    • Crank the engine.

Does The Test Lamp Blink Consistently And Brightly (One Blink Per Engine Revolution)?

    Yes No
GO to  AA8. GO to  AA7.
  7. AA7 CHECK THE PCM INJECTOR DRIVER CIRCUIT
    • Key off.
    • Disconnect the AFCM C1404.
    • Key on, engine off.
NOTE: Check at least one fuel injector on each bank.
NOTE: Refer to the PCM CONTROLLED INJECTOR DRIVER PINS  table in the beginning of this pinpoint test.
    • Connect a test lamp between VPWR and the AFCM C1404 right bank injector driver circuit, harness side; and between VPWR and the AFCM C1404 left bank injector driver circuit, harness side.
    • Crank the engine.

DOES THE TEST LAMP BLINK CONSISTENTLY AND BRIGHTLY (ONE BLINK PER ENGINE REVOLUTION)?

    Yes No
GO to  AA8. INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to the base vehicle DIAGNOSTIC METHODS - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE .
  8. AA8 CHECK THE ALT FUEL INJECTOR DRIVER CIRCUIT
NOTE: Check at least one fuel injector on each bank.
    • Connect a test lamp between the right bank ALT fuel injector VPWR circuit, harness side, and the right bank ALT fuel driver circuit, harness; and between the left bank ALT fuel injector VPWR circuit, harness side, and the left bank ALT fuel injector driver circuit, harness side.
    • Crank the engine.

Does The Test Lamp Blink Consistently And Brightly (One Blink Per Engine Revolution) For Each Bank?

    Yes No
GO to  AA9. The injector drivers are operating correctly. Refer to the base vehicle INTRODUCTION - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE to continue No Start diagnosis.
  9. AA9 CHECK FOR CORRECT AFCM OPERATION
    • Disconnect the AFCM.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed out pins
    • Connect the AFCM connector and make sure it is seated correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.

    Is The Concern Still Present?

    Yes No
INSTALL a new AFCM. The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
