Test Procedure
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2004 Ford RV Cutaway, 2004 Ford Pickup, 2004 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2004 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2004 Ford Excursion. - V1 PRELIMINARY DIAGNOSIS FOR DTCs P0340, P0341, P2614 NOTE: Some DTCs require that the engine go through more than one key cycle to set.NOTE: DTCs P2617 and P2614 may set simultaneously after an engine stalling event.NOTE: DTC P2614 is calibrated to an increment counter. To set the DTC requires more than 5 consecutive fault events in the crank mode or 10 fault events in the run mode. Perform the required number of key cycles from RUN to START to RUN (cycling to OFF will reset timer) and then perform the KOEO or KOER self-test.
- Perform a visual inspection.
- Connect the scan tool.
- Retrieve and record all DTCs.
- Record freeze frame data.
- Clear all DTCs.
- Perform the On-Demand Self-Test.
ARE ANY DTCS RETRIEVED?
Yes No For P0340, P0341 or P2614, Go to V2. UNABLE to duplicate condition. CHECK for loose connections, damaged or corroded pins. WIGGLE harness attempting to recreate fault. REFER to SYMPTOM CHARTS - 6.0L DIESEL if a driveability concern exists. REFER to DIAGNOSTIC SUBROUTINES - 6.0L DIESEL to diagnose a no-start condition. - V2 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCs) P0340, P0341 OR P2614 NOTE: Refer to the PCM and component connector pin numbers, Figure, Figure and Figure, at the beginning of this pinpoint test.
- Possible causes:
- CMP circuit open
- CMP circuit short to ground
- CMP circuit short to power
- signal circuit open
- signal circuit shorted
- PCM
- CMP sensor
DOES THE ENGINE START?
Yes No Go to V3. REFER to DIAGNOSTIC SUBROUTINES - 6.0L DIESEL to diagnose a no-start. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST the system. - Possible causes:
- V3 ATTEMPT TO REGENERATE DTCs
- Clear all DTCs.
- Start the engine.
- Increase RPM to greater than 1,500 RPM for 10 seconds. Repeat two times.
- Key on, engine off.
- Perform On-Demand Self-Test.
IS DTC P0340, P0341 OR P2614 PRESENT?
Yes No Go to V4. CHECK for a loose connection. REPAIR as necessary. CHECK pins for damage or corrosion. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST the system. - V4 CHECK THE RESISTANCE OF THE CMP SENSOR CIRCUITS
- Key off.
- Disconnect the PCM engine harness connector.
- Measure the resistance between PCM engine harness connector pin 31 and pin 43.
IS THE RESISTANCE BETWEEN 800 AND 1,000 OHMS?
Yes No Go to V5. Go to V7. - V5 CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT SHORT
- Connect the PCM engine harness connector.
- Connect the scan tool.
- Key on, engine off.
- Select the CMP sensor fault PID.
- Monitor PID while wiggling the harness.
IS A FAULT PRESENT?
Yes No REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST the system. For DTCs P0340 or P0341, Go to V6.
For DTC P2614, Go to V9. - V6 CONFIRM PCM FAULT
- Key on.
- Clear all DTCs.
- Perform On-Demand Self-Test.
ARE DTCS P0340 AND P0341 PRESENT?
Yes No INSTALL a new PCM. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST the system. Unable to duplicate condition. CHECK for loose connections, damaged or corroded pins. WIGGLE harness attempting to recreate fault. REFER to SYMPTOM CHARTS - 6.0L DIESEL . - V7 CHECK CMP SENSOR CIRCUITS
- Disconnect the CMP sensor.
- Inspect the CMP sensor connector for damaged or corroded pins.
- Measure the resistance between PCM harness connector pin 31 and ground; and between pin 43 and ground.
IS THE RESISTANCE GREATER THAN 10,000 OHMS?
Yes No Go to V8. REPAIR short in CMP sensor circuits. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST the system. - V8 CHECK CMP CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance between PCM engine harness connector pin 31 and CMP sensor harness connector pin 1; and between PCM engine harness connector pin 43 and CMP sensor harness connector pin 2.
IS THE RESISTANCE LESS THAN 5 OHMS?
Yes No INSTALL a new CMP sensor. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST the system. REPAIR open circuit. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST the system. - V9 CHECK CAMSHAFT POSITION SIGNAL FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Key off.
- Disconnect the PCM engine harness connector.
- Disconnect the FICM harness connector C3.
- Key on, engine off.
- Measure the voltage between FICM harness connector C3 pin 10 and ground.
IS ANY VOLTAGE INDICATED?
Yes No REPAIR short to voltage. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST the system. Go to V10. - V10 CHECK CAMSHAFT POSITION SIGNAL FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Key off.
- Measure the resistance between FICM harness connector C3 pin 10 and ground.
IS THE RESISTANCE GREATER THAN 10,000 OHMS?
Yes No Go to V11. REPAIR short to ground in the camshaft output signal circuit. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST the system. - V11 CHECK CAMSHAFT POSITION SIGNAL FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance between FICM harness connector C3 pin 10 and PCM engine harness connector pin 20.
IS THE RESISTANCE LESS THAN 5 OHMS?
Yes No Go to V12. REPAIR open in the camshaft signal output circuit. RESTORE the vehicle. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST the system. - V12 CHECK THE CMP SENSOR
- Remove the CMP sensor.
- Visually inspect the sensor for damage, misalignment and improper installation.
IS A CONCERN PRESENT?
Yes No REPAIR as necessary. CLEAR the DTCs and RETEST the system. INSTALL a new PCM. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST the system.
