Axle Shaft: Removal

- Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
- Remove the wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to WHEELS & TIRES .
- Remove the differential housing cover (4033).
- Remove the 10 differential housing cover bolts and drain the lubricant from the rear axle housing (4010).
- Remove the differential housing cover.
- Remove the rear brake drums. For additional information, REFER to DISC & DRUM .
- Remove the differential pinion shaft.
- Remove and discard the differential pinion shaft lock bolt.
- Remove the differential pinion shaft.
- Remove the U-washers.
- Push the axle shafts inboard.
- Remove the U-washers.
- Remove the two axle shafts.
NOTE:
Empty the lubricant into a clean container for reuse.
CAUTION:
Do not damage the rubber O-rings in the axle shaft grooves.
CAUTION:
Do not damage the wheel bearing oil seal.
