Test K: Invalid Or Missing Vehicle Security Data

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Navigator, 2002 Ford Expedition, 2001 Lincoln Navigator, and 2001 Ford Expedition. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition switch to START position. Observe THEFT indicator. Indicator should illuminate, then go out within 3 seconds and vehicle should start. If vehicle will not start, go to next step. If THEFT indicator operates as specified and vehicle starts, verify proper Powertrain Control Module (PCM) calibration.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, perform PCM self-test. Record any DTCs present. Clear DTCs. Using NGS tester, perform PCM Key On Engine Off (KOEO) self-test. Record any DTCs and go to next step. If NGS tester does not communicate with PCM. See TEST H: POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER under SYSTEM TESTS in MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article.
  3. Using NGS tester, perform instrument cluster self test. Retrieve DTCs from instrument cluster. If DTC P1260 was retrieved, go to next step. If DTC P1260 was not retrieved, check PCM power and grounds. See POWER DISTRIBUTION and GROUND DISTRIBUTION in appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
  4. Perform DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If DTC U1147 is not retrieved, system is okay. If DTC U1147 is retrieved, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Cycle ignition switch to RUN position using 2 encoded keys. Perform TEST I: PCM ID DOES NOT MATCH INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ID . If DTC U1147 is still present, replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
