Removal & Installation (4.2L)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Ford Econoline. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure even when the engine is not running. Before repairing or disconnecting any of the fuel lines or fuel system components, the fuel system pressure must be relieved to prevent accidental spraying of fuel, causing personal injury or a fire hazard. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE .
CAUTION: Use "O" rings made of special fuel resistant material. Use of ordinary "O" rings can cause the fuel system to leak. Do not reuse "O" rings.

Disconnect negative battery cable. On vehicles with dual batteries, see DUAL BATTERIES  under MISCELLANEOUS. Remove engine cover. See ENGINE COVER  under MISCELLANEOUS. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE . Remove vacuum hose from fuel pressure regulator. Remove clip from fuel pressure regulator. Remove fuel pressure regulator. See Fig 1. Remove and discard "O" ring. To install, reverse removal procedure. Install NEW "O" rings and lubricate with clean engine oil. See Fig 2.
