Pinpoint Test F: Clutch Related Vibrations

  1. F1 CHECK FOR ENGINE COMPONENT GROUNDING 
    • With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
    • Check the engine and transmission mounts for grounding.
    • Check for exhaust manifolds or other engine components grounding on the body or frame.
    • Is there evidence of grounding on the body or frame? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR components as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : Go to  F2.
  2. F2 CHECK FOR ACCESSORY DRIVE VIBRATIONS 
    • Remove the accessory drive belt.
    • Key in START position.
    • Does the vibration stop when the accessory drive belt is removed from the engine? 
    1. YES  : REFER to ACCESSORY DRIVE article to diagnose the accessory drive belt components.
    2. NO  : STOP the engine and REINSTALL the drive belt. Go to  F3 .
  3. F3 CHECK FOR RELEASE BEARING NOISE 
    • Key in START position.
    • Depress and hold the clutch pedal.
    • Is a whirring, grating or grinding noise present only when pedal is pushed? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new clutch release hub and bearing; REFER to CLUTCH article.
    2. NO  : Go to  F4.
  4. F4 INSPECT THE FLYWHEEL 
    1. YES  : Go to  F5.
    2. NO  : TIGHTEN or INSTALL a new flywheel. REFER to CLUTCH article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. F5 INSPECT THE PILOT BEARING 
    • Inspect the pilot bearing for wear or damage.
    • Is the pilot bearing worn or damaged? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new pilot bearing. REFER to CLUTCH article.
    2. NO  : Go to  F6.
  6. F6 CHECK FOR PRESSURE PLATE IMBALANCE 
      CAUTION: Failure to support the engine correctly could result in damage to the vehicle.
    • Support the engine securely.
    • Operate the engine with the transmission removed.
    • Is the vibration still present? 
    1. YES  : REFER to NOISE, VIBRATION AND HARSHNESS article to diagnose the engine vibration concern.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new clutch pressure plate. REFER to CLUTCH article. TEST the system for normal operation.
