Pinpoint Test F: Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) Sensors

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Lincoln Mark LT and 2007 Ford Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Refer to the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) Sensor Harness Connector illustration Transmission Connector Layouts  in this article.
  1. F1 ELECTRONIC DIAGNOSTICS
    • Check to make sure the transmission harness connector is fully seated, pins are fully engaged in connector and in good condition before proceeding.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Diagnostic Data Link
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: PCM
    • Select PID/Data Monitor and Record.
    • Select the PID TSS.
    • Does vehicle enter PID/Data Monitor and Record?
    1. YES  : Go to  F2.
    2. NO  : REPEAT procedure to ENTER PID. If vehicle did not enter PID, REFER to the INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE ENGINES article for diagnosis of PCM.
  2. F2 DRIVE CYCLE TEST
    • While monitoring the turbine shaft speed (TSS) PID, drive the vehicle so that the transmission upshifts and downshifts through all gears.
    • Does the TSS PID increase and decrease with engine and vehicle speed?
    1. YES  : CLEAR all DTCs. ROAD TEST to verify if concern is still present. If concern is still present, REFER to Diagnosis By Symptom  in this article.
    2. NO  : If the TSS PID does not increase and decrease with engine and vehicle speed, INSPECT for open or short in vehicle harness, sensor, a PCM concern, or internal hardware concern.

If the sensor signal is erratic, INSPECT for intermittent concern in the internal/external harness, sensor, or connector.

If the sensor signal is steady, go to  F3 .

  3. F3 CHECK THE PCM HARNESS FOR OPENS
    • Disconnect: PCM
    • Disconnect: TSS Sensor
    • Measure the resistance between PCM pin 15 and TSS connector pin 1 harness side.
    • Fig 1: Measuring Resistance Between PCM Pin 15 And TSS Connector Pin 1 Harness Side

    • Measure the resistance between PCM pin 43 and TSS connector pin 2 harness side.
    • Fig 2: Measuring Resistance Between PCM Pin 43 And TSS Connector Pin 2 Harness Side

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
    1. YES  : Go to  F4.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. F4 CHECK THE PCM HARNESS FOR SHORT TO GROUND
    • Disconnect: PCM
    • Disconnect: TSS Sensor
    • Measure the resistance between PCM pin 15 and chassis ground.
    • Fig 3: Measuring Resistance Between PCM Pin 15 And Chassis Ground

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
    1. YES  : Go to  F5.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. F5 CHECK RESISTANCE OF THE TURBINE SHAFT SPEED (TSS) SENSOR
    • Disconnect the vehicle harness connector from the TSS sensor.
    • Measure the resistance between the TSS sensor pins.
    • Fig 4: Measuring Resistance Between TSS Sensor Pins
      GF0003470Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO.
    • Record the resistance.
    • Is the resistance within 480-590 ohms?
    1. YES  : REFER to Diagnosis By Symptom  in this article for concern diagnosis.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new TSS sensor.
