Pinpoint Test G: DTC B1681 - Passive Anti-Theft System (Pats) Transceiver Signal Is Not Received (Not Connected, Damaged, Or Wiring)

CAUTION: Use the correct probe adaptor(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adaptor(s) may damage the connector.
  1. G1 USE THE DTCS FROM THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) SELF-TEST 
    • Use the recorded PCM continuous and on-demand self-test DTCs.
    • Is DTC B1681 retrieved? 

    Yes  : GO to G2.

    No  : The system is OK.

  2. G2 INSPECT THE PATS TRANSCEIVER FOR CORRECT INSTALLATION 
    • Key in the OFF position for a minimum of 3 seconds.
    • Verify the PATS transceiver is correctly installed. Refer to PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) TRANSCEIVER  in this article.
    • Was the transceiver correctly installed? 

    Yes  : GO to G3.

    No  : CORRECT the installation. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  3. G3 CHECK THE PATS TRANSCEIVER CIRCUIT 296 (WH/VT) FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Key in the OFF position for a minimum of 3 seconds.
    • Disconnect: PATS Transceiver C2007.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the PATS transceiver C2007-1, circuit 296 (WH/VT), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 9 volts? 

    Yes  GO to G4.

    No  : VERIFY that smart junction box (SJB) fuse 5 (2A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  4. G4 CHECK THE PATS TRANSCEIVER GROUND CIRCUIT 570 (BK/WH) 
    • Key in the OFF position for a minimum of 3 seconds.
    • Measure the resistance between the PATS transceiver C2007-2, circuit 570 (BK/WH), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes  : GO to G5.

    No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  5. G5 CHECK THE PATS TRANSCEIVER RECEIVE CIRCUIT 168 (RD/BK) FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Connect: PATS Transceiver C2007.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage by back-probing between the PATS transceiver C2007-4, circuit 168 (RD/BK), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 9 volts? 

    Yes  : GO to  G8.

    No  : GO to G6.

  6. G6 CHECK THE PATS TRANSCEIVER RECEIVE CIRCUIT 168 (RD/BK) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in the OFF position for a minimum of 3 seconds.
    • Disconnect: PATS Transceiver C2007.
    • Measure the resistance between the PATS transceiver C2007-4, circuit 168 (RD/BK), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance greater than 100 ohms? 

    Yes  : GO to  G8.

    No  : GO to G7.

  7. G7 CHECK THE PATS TRANSCEIVER RECEIVE CIRCUIT 168 (RD/BK) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE PCM DISCONNECTED 
    • Key in the OFF position for a minimum of 3 seconds.
    • Disconnect: PCM 175b.
    • Measure the resistance between the PATS transceiver C2007-4, circuit 168 (RD/BK), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance greater than 100 ohms? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - HYBRID . PROGRAM the keys. REFER to KEY PROGRAMMING USING DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT  in this article. CARRY OUT the parameter reset procedure, REFER to PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) PARAMETER RESET  in this article. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  : REPAIR circuit 168 (RD/BK). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. If the vehicle is equipped with the valet feature, program the third key (if available) or instruct the customer on how to carry out this procedure. REFER to KEY PROGRAMMING USING TWO PROGRAMMED KEYS  in this article.

  8. G8 CHECK CIRCUIT 168 (RD/BK) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in the OFF position for a minimum of 3 seconds.
    • Disconnect: PATS Transceiver C2007.
    • Disconnect: PCM C175b.
    • Measure the resistance between the PATS transceiver C2007-4, circuit 168 (RD/BK), harness side and the PCM C175b-42, circuit 168 (RD/BK), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes  : GO to G9.

    No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  9. G9 CHECK THE PATS TRANSCEIVER TRANSMIT CIRCUIT 167 (BR/OG) FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Key in the OFF position for a minimum of 3 seconds.
    • Connect: PATS Transceiver C2007.
    • Connect: PCM C175b.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage by back-probing between the PATS transceiver C2007-3, circuit 167 (BR/OG), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 9 volts? 

    Yes  : GO to  G12.

    No  : GO to G10.

  10. G10 CHECK THE PATS TRANSCEIVER TRANSMIT CIRCUIT 167 (BR/OG) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in the OFF position for a minimum of 3 seconds.
    • Disconnect: PCM C175b.
    • Measure the resistance between the PATS transceiver C2007-3, circuit 167 (BR/OG), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance greater than 100 ohms? 

    Yes  : GO to  G12.

    No  : GO to G11.

  11. G11 CHECK THE PATS TRANSCEIVER TRANSMIT CIRCUIT 167 (BR/OG) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE PCM DISCONNECTED 
    • Key in the OFF position for a minimum of 3 seconds.
    • Disconnect: PCM C175b.
    • Measure the resistance between the PATS transceiver C2007-3, circuit 167 (BR/OG), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance greater than 100 ohms? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - HYBRID . PROGRAM the keys. REFER to KEY PROGRAMMING USING DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT  in this article. CARRY OUT the parameter reset procedure, REFER to PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) PARAMETER RESET  in this article. TEST the system for normal operation. If the vehicle is equipped with the valet feature, program the third key (if available) or instruct the customer on how to carry out this procedure. REFER to KEY PROGRAMMING USING TWO PROGRAMMED KEYS  in this article.

    No  : REPAIR circuit 167 (BR/OG). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  12. G12 CHECK THE PATS TRANSMIT CIRCUIT 167 (BR/OG) FOR CORRECT OPERATION 
    • Connect: PATS Transceiver C2007.
    • Trigger the PCM active command RF_ SIGNAL to ON while measuring the voltage by back probing between the PATS transceiver C2007-3, circuit 167 (BR/OG), harness side and ground.

    • Does the voltage drop from greater than 9 volts to less than 1 volt when the PCM active command RF__SIGNAL is triggered ON? 

    Yes  : GO to  G14.

    No  : GO to G13.

  13. G13 CHECK THE PATS TRANSMIT CIRCUIT 167 (BR/OG) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Connect: PATS Transceiver C2007.
    • Measure the resistance between the PATS transceiver C2007-3, circuit 167 (BR/OG), harness side and the PCM C175b-31, circuit 167 (BR/OG), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 Ohms? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - HYBRID . PROGRAM the keys. REFER to KEY PROGRAMMING USING DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT  in this article. REFER to PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) PARAMETER RESET  in this article. TEST the system for normal operation. If the vehicle is equipped with the valet feature, program the third key (if available) or instruct the customer on how to carry out this procedure. REFER to KEY PROGRAMMING USING TWO PROGRAMMED KEYS  in this article.

    No  : REPAIR circuit 167 (BR/OG). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  14. G14 CHECK THE PATS SYSTEM WITH A NEW PATS TRANSCEIVER INSTALLED 
    • Key in the OFF position for a minimum of 3 seconds.
    • Install a new PATS transceiver. Refer to PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) TRANSCEIVER  in this article.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Carry out the PCM self-test.
    • Is DTC B1681 retrieved? 

    Yes  : GO to G15.

    No  : The system is OK.

  15. G15 CHECK THE PATS SYSTEM WITH A NEW PCM 
    • Key in the OFF position for a minimum of 3 seconds.
    • Install a new PCM. Refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - HYBRID . Cycle the key to ON using two PATS keys. Program the keys. Refer to KEY PROGRAMMING USING DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT  in this article. GO to PINPOINT TEST  to initialize the module. If the vehicle is equipped with the valet feature, program the 3rd key (if available) or instruct the customer on how to carry out this procedure. REFER to KEY PROGRAMMING USING TWO PROGRAMMED KEYS  in this article.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: CLEAR DTCs.
    • Carry out the PCM self-test.
    • Is DTC B1681 retrieved? 

    Yes  : REPAIR circuits 296 (WH/VT), 570 (BK/WH), 167 (BR/OG), and 168 (RD/BK). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

    No  : If no DTCs are retrieved, the system is OK.
