PINPOINT TEST D: DTCs B1600 AND B2431 - THE PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) IGNITION KEY TRANSPONDER SIGNAL IS NOT RECEIVED OR THE TRANSPONDER PROGRAMMING FAILED (DAMAGED KEY OR NON-PATS KEY)
If a problem occurs, turn the ignition switch OFF and restart the engine with all other objects on the key ring held away from the PATS key.
Check to ensure the PATS key used by the customer is an approved Ford PATS key (PATS keys from Rotunda, Huf or Strattec are approved Ford PATS keys).
- D1 USE THE DTCS FROM THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) SELF-TEST
- Use the recorded PCM continuous and on-demand self-test DTCs.
- Is DTC B1600 or B2431 retrieved?
Yes : GO to D2.
No : If other DTCs are retrieved, REFER to PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) - DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC) INDEX . If no DTCs are retrieved, system is OK.
- D2 PROGRAM A NEW PATS KEY
- Key in the OFF position for a minimum of 3 seconds.
- Cut a new PATS key.
- Key in ON position.
- Program the new PATS key. Refer to KEY PROGRAMMING USING DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT in this article.
- Key in the OFF position for a minimum of 3 seconds.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: CLEAR DTCs.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: RETRIEVE DTCs.
- Is DTC B1600 or B2431 still present?
NOTE: Check to make sure the customer and replacement PATS keys are approved Ford encoded PATS keys. Unapproved PATS keys do not always operate correctly over different temperature ranges (PATS keys from Rotunda, Huf or Strattec are approved PATS keys).Yes : GO to D3.
No : If no other DTCs are retrieved, the system is OK. If other DTCs are retrieved, REFER to PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) - DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC) INDEX .
- D3 INSTALL A NEW PATS TRANSCEIVER
- Key in the OFF position for a minimum of 3 seconds.
- Install a new PATS transceiver. Refer to PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) TRANSCEIVER in this article.
- Key in ON position.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: CLEAR DTCs.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: RETRIEVE DTCs.
- Is DTC B1600 or B2431 retrieved?
NOTE: Use the customer's original PATS key, not the PATS key that was cut in the previous step.Yes : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - HYBRID . TURN the ignition switch to ON using 2 PATS keys. CARRY OUT the parameter reset procedure, REFER to PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) PARAMETER RESET in this article. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. If the vehicle is equipped with the valet feature, program the third key (if available) or instruct the customer on how to carry out this procedure. REFER to KEY PROGRAMMING USING TWO PROGRAMMED KEYS in this article.
No : The system is OK.
