DTC P1A03: Drive Motor A Shutdown Circuit

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Mariner and 2006 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
P1A03 - DRIVE MOTOR A SHUTDOWN CIRCUIT

Description:  The TCM continuously monitors the motor shutdown (MSDN) circuit and the CAN signal for an MSDN request from the PCM. This DTC is set when the PCM requests traction motor shutdown through the CAN signal or if there is an MSDN circuit fault. The traction motor inverter will be disabled.
Possible Causes:
  • MSDN circuit open.
  • MSDN circuit short to PWR or GND.
  • PCM MSDN request.
  • Damaged TCM.
  • Damaged PCM.
Diagnostic Aids:  With the PCM and TCM connected and KOEO, check the MSDN signal frequency. If the frequency is between 49 and 75 Hz DC, no circuit problem is indicated and PCM traction motor shutdown is requested.
