Pinpoint Test E: THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATION DOES NOT DIM

  1. E1 RETRIEVE THE DTCS FROM THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER 
    • Check the recorded results from the instrument cluster self-test.
    • Are any DTCs retrieved? 
    • Yes  : If DTC B1246, GO to  E3.
    • No  : GO to  E2.
  2. E2 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DIMMER SWITCH - MONITOR THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PID 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster PID
    • Turn the headlamps ON.
    • Select and monitor the instrument cluster PID DSWSTAT while rotating the instrument panel dimmer switch from the lowest position to the highest position.
    • Does the PID value agree with the instrument panel dimmer switch position? 
    • Yes  : GO to  E7.
    • No  : GO to  E3.
  3. E3 CHECK CIRCUIT 8-LE10 (WH/BK) FOR AN OPEN OR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Turn the headlamps OFF.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch C206.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220c.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220c-16, circuit 8-LE10 (WH/BK), harness side and the instrument panel dimmer switch C206-6, circuit 8-LE10 (WH/BK), harness side and; and between the instrument cluster C220c-16, circuit 8-LE10 (WH/BK), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the instrument cluster and the instrument panel dimmer switch, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the instrument cluster and around? 
    • Yes  : GO to  E4.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  4. E4 CHECK CIRCUIT 9-LE10 (BN/YE) FOR AN OPEN OR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument panel dimmer switch C206-4, circuit 9-LE10 (BN/YE), harness side and the instrument cluster C220c-4, circuit 9-LE10 (BN/YE), harness side; and between the instrument panel dimmer switch C206-4, circuit 9-LE10 (BN/YE), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the instrument panel dimmer switch and instrument cluster, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the instrument panel dimmer switch and ground? 
    • Yes  : GO to  E5.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  5. E5 CHECK CIRCUITS 8-LE10 (WH/BK) AND 9-LE10 (BN/YE) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the instrument panel dimmer switch C206-6, circuit 8-LE10 (WH/BK), harness side and ground; and between the instrument panel dimmer switch C206-4, circuit 9-LE10 (BN/YE), harness side and ground.

    • Is any voltage indicated? 
    • Yes  : REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    • No  : GO to  E6.
  6. E6 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DIMMER SWITCH 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument panel dimmer switch C206-4, circuit 9-LE10 (BN/YE), component side and the instrument panel dimmer switch C206-6, circuit 8-LE10 (WH/BK), component side.

    • Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch from the minimum brightness level to the maximum brightness level.
    • Does the resistance begin at approximately 1000 ohms at the minimum brightness level and move to approximately 10 megaohms at the maximum brightness level? 
    • Yes  : GO to  E8.
    • No  : INSTALL a new instrument panel dimmer switch. REFER to INSTRUMENT PANEL DIMMER SWITCH  in this article. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  7. E7 CHECK FOR CORRECT FEM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the FEM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the FEM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    • Yes  : INSTALL a new FEM. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES . TEST the system for normal operation.
    • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  8. E8 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    • Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
    • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTC's. REPEAT the self-test.
