Test Procedure
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2005 Ford RV Cutaway, 2005 Ford Pickup, 2005 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2005 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2005 Ford Excursion. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- AQ1 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P2291 NOTE: This DTC may set after a high-pressure oil system repair or injector change. Drive the vehicle to clear air from the system after the repair and clear the DTC.
- Continuous DTC P2291 indicates that there was no ICP detected during crank (long crank time).
- Possible causes:
- high-pressure oil system repair
- empty/low oil reservoir at crank
- low engine oil level or incorrect viscosity
- IPR circuit fault
- low-pressure oil pump
- IPR valve
- ICP sensor
- high-pressure oil pump
- Check the engine oil level.
- Record the freeze frame data.
- Carry out the KOEO on-demand self-test to verify ICP and IPR circuit faults are not present.
Are any DTCs present?
Yes No REPAIR the DTCs before continuing. REFER to DIAGNOSTIC SUBROUTINES - 6.0L DIESEL Diagnostic Trouble Code Descriptions.
For DTC P2291, GO to AQ2.GO to AQ2. - AQ2 CHECK THE OIL LEVEL NOTE: If the vehicle stalls after, start oil is not being supplied from the low pressure oil system.
- Verify the correct oil level, quality, and viscosity.
- Check base engine oil pressure. Refer to ENGINE for specifications.
- Verify steps 5 and 10 on the Hard Start/No Start Diagnostic Guide have been carried out.
- Clear the DTCs.
- Monitor the ICP PID while cranking the engine.
Is the ICP PID minimum voltage 0.85 volts within 5 seconds of crank?
Yes No The DTC is intermittent. GO to AQ6. GO to AQ3. - AQ3 CHECK THE ICP SENSOR
- Key OFF.
- Disconnect the ICP sensor.
Does the vehicle start?
Yes No INSTALL a new ICP sensor. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. GO to AQ4. - AQ4 HIGH-PRESSURE LEAKAGE TEST
- Connect the ICP sensor.
- Clear the ICP sensor DTCs.
- Carry out the Injection Control Pressure Tests. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC SUBROUTINES - 6.0L DIESEL Hard Start/No Start Procedures.
Is a leak present?
Yes No REPAIR as necessary. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. GO to AQ5. - AQ5 CHECK THE IPR VALVE
- Connect all hoses and the ICP sensor.
- Install a new IPR valve.
Does the vehicle start?
Yes No System OK. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. INSTALL a new high pressure pump. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. - AQ6 CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT CIRCUIT FAULTS
- Key ON, engine OFF.
- Access the ICP PID.
- Grasp the vehicle harness near the ICP sensor connector. Wiggle and shake the vehicle harness while working toward the PCM.
Does the ICP PID reading fluctuate?
Yes No REPAIR the circuit as necessary. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. GO to AQ7. - AQ7 INSPECT THE IPR CIRCUIT
- Inspect the IPR circuit from the IPR valve through the 12-way connector to the PCM.
Are any concerns present?
Yes No REPAIR the circuit as necessary. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. UNABLE to duplicate the condition. CHECK for a loose connection, and damaged or corroded terminals. WIGGLE the harness attempting to recreate the fault. REPAIR as necessary. REFER to SYMPTOM CHARTS - 6.0L DIESEL if a driveability concern exists.
