Upper Control Arm, Ball Joint & Mounting Brackets: Installation

  1. Install adjusting arm to control arm. Install shims, as removed, on control arm studs. Install and tighten nuts retaining shims to control arm.
  2. Install boot seal on upper and/or lower ball joint. If removed, install damper assembly. Place flat plate for mounting brackets in position on frame rail. Install and tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
  3. Place mounting brackets and upper control arm assembly in position on flat plate. Install 3 long mounting bracket-to-frame rail bolts.
  4. Rotate or rock upper control arm and mounting bracket assembly until bolt heads rest against mounting bracket. Ensure studs extend through frame rail.
  5. Place mounting brackets in position marked on flat plate during removal. Install bolt retainer plate and bolt, and tighten to specification. Install and tighten mounting bracket-to-frame rail nuts to specification.
  6. CAUTION: Torque required for mounting bracket-to-frame rail nuts and bolts is critical. Tighten to specification.
  7. To minimize alignment corrections, ensure mounting brackets DO NOT move from marked position on flat plate. Install and tighten the front mounting bracket-to-flat plate bolt to specification.
  8. Install spindle. See SPINDLE  . Check caster, camber and toe-in, and adjust if necessary. Use service adjustment shims, as required, for caster and camber revisions.
