Cylinder Head R & I: Inspection

  1. Check cylinder head warpage at deck surface. Resurface cylinder head if warpage exceeds specification. See CYLINDER HEAD  table in ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.
    CAUTION: DO NOT machine more than .010" (.25 mm) from cylinder head original thickness.
  2. Check cylinder block deck surface. Resurface cylinder block if warpage exceeds specification. See CYLINDER BLOCK  table in ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.

  3. Check piston squish height every time cylinder head is removed. Piston squish height is clearance between piston dome and cylinder head dome, with piston at TDC.
  4. Ensure gasket surfaces are clean. Place a small amount of SOFT lead solder on No. 1 piston spherical areas. See Fig 1. Rotate crankshaft and lower piston in cylinder bore.

  5. Install used head gasket. A used head gasket is preferred, as it is compressed and gives the least amount of clearance.
    CAUTION: Ensure camshaft sprocket timing mark is aligned with cylinder head timing mark to prevent valve damage. See Figure.
  6. Install cylinder head. Install USED cylinder head bolts and tighten bolts to 30-44 ft. lbs. (41-60 N.m) in sequence. Refer to Figure.
  7. Rotate crankshaft and move piston through TDC position. Remove cylinder head. Measure thickness of compressed soft lead solder to determine piston squish height at TDC. See Fig 2.

  8. Piston squish height should be .039-.070" (.99-1.78 mm). If no parts other than head gasket are replaced, piston squish height should be within specifications. If parts other than head gasket are replaced and piston squish height is not within specification, replace parts again. Recheck piston squish height.
CAUTION: DO NOT install cylinder head without performing piston squish height. See INSPECTION under CYLINDER HEAD R & I  in this article. DO NOT reuse cylinder head bolts. Ensure bolt holes in cylinder head are clean.
