- Coat camshaft, camshaft bores, thrust plate groove and camshaft oil seal lip with 30W engine oil. Install camshaft and thrust plate. Tighten thrust plate retaining bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article.
- Ensure camshaft end play is within specification. Replace thrust plate and/or camshaft if end play is not within specification. See CAMSHAFT table in ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.
- Using Seal Installer (T81P-6292-A), install camshaft oil seal if removed. Apply sealant on cup plug and install in rear of cylinder head.CAUTION: DO NOT use excessive amount of sealant, as sealant may clog oil holes in camshaft.
- Install camshaft sprocket and cam position sensor. Tighten retaining bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. Install timing belt.
- Lubricate valve lifter bore with SG API rated engine oil. Install valve lifter in original location so flat areas on valve lifter are parallel with center line of camshaft.CAUTION: Ensure color code on valve lifter aligns with oil feed hole of cylinder head. DO NOT align valve lifter oil feed hole with cylinder head oil feed hole. Intake valve lifters should have color code facing distributor end and exhaust valve lifters toward timing belt end. See Fig 1.
- Install valve lifter guide over flat areas of valve lifter with tab toward exhaust side of cylinder head. See Figure. Lubricate valve lifter plunger cap and tip of valve stem with engine oil.
- Install valve lifter guide retainers into fulcrum slots with notch toward exhaust side. See Figure. Install rocker arm on No. 3, 6, 7 and 8 valve lifters. See Figure.
- Lubricate rocker arm-to-fulcrum surface with engine oil. Install fulcrums on rocker arms. Ensure fulcrum is seated in slots on cylinder head. Install retaining bolts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article.
- Rotate camshaft so camshaft sprocket key is at 6 o'clock position. Install remaining components. Rotate camshaft back so camshaft sprocket key is at 12 o'clock position.
- Install cam position sensor. Tighten retaining bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.
