Pinpoint Test AH Outside Temperature Always Indicates 135-140°F (57-60°C)
- Verifying Condition: Turn ignition on. Read outside temperature. Remove No. 1 fuse (Town Car) or No. 5 (Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis). Instrument cluster should go blank.
- After 30 seconds, reinstall fuse. Read outside temperature. If reading is correct, refer to pinpoint index for further testing. See Figure . If reading is incorrect, go to step 3).
- Checking Connector: Unplug 16-pin connector (with Dark Blue/Yellow wire) at left rear corner of engine compartment, behind wheel well. Turn ignition on. Remove No. 1 fuse (Town Car) or No. 5 (Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis). Reinstall fuse after 30 seconds. Read outside air temperature.
- If reading is -40°F (-40°C), go to step 7). Go to next step if reading is not -40°F (-40°C).
- Checking Instrument Cluster: Remove instrument cluster finish panel. Unplug C2-1 connector from instrument cluster. See Figure . Using small screwdriver, release pin No. 1 (Pink/Orange wire) from C2-1 connector. Reinstall C2-1 connector. Turn ignition on.
- Remove fuse No. 1 (Town Car) or No. 5 (Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis). Reinstall fuse after 30 seconds. Read outside air temperature. If reading is -40°F (-40°C), repair wiring between instrument cluster and C1 connector. If reading is not -40°F (-40°C), replace cluster.
- Checking Air Temperature Sensor Connector: Reinstall pin No. 1 into C2-1 connector. Install connector onto instrument cluster. Unplug electrical connector from air temperature sensor at radiator support. Air temperature connector has Dark Blue/Yellow and Pink/Orange wires.
- Turn ignition on. Remove fuse No. 1 (Town Car) or No. 5 (Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis). Reinstall fuse after 30 seconds. Read outside air temperature. If reading is not -40°F (-40°F), repair wiring between instrument cluster C2-1 connector and air temperature sensor. If reading is -40°F (-40°C), go to step 9).
- Checking Air Temperature Sensor: Measure resistance between air temperature sensor terminals. Resistance should be 33,000-47,000 ohms at 60-70°F (16-21°C). If resistance is within specifications, return to step 1) and retest system. If resistance is not within specifications, replace air temperature sensor.
