Test TC: Temperature Gauge Display Blanks Out Thermometer Symbol; Top 2 And Bottom 2 Segment Bars Illuminated

  1. Check For Short In Sender Unit

    Unplug connector to temperature sending unit. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Temperature gauge should indicate Cold (bottom segment bar of display should be illuminated). If temperature gauge functions as specified, replace temperature sending unit. Temperature sending unit is located at thermostat housing. If temperature gauge does not function as specified, go to next step.

  2. Check For Short In Wiring

    Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect temperature sending unit connector. Remove Electronic Instrument Cluster (EIC). See ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using DVOM, measure resistance between EIC connector "B" terminals No. 4 (Red/White wire) and No. 8 (Black/White wire). If reading is 15 k-ohms or more, replace EIC. If reading is less than 15 k-ohms, repair short in Red/White wire. See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
