Test Ff: Inaccurate Fuel Indication

  1. Check Fuel Gauge Response

    Disconnect negative battery cable. Lower fuel tank to gain access to fuel tank sending unit connector. Connect a 43-ohm, 7-watt resistor in place of fuel tank sending unit (Yellow/White wire to ground). Reconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If fuel gauge does not register between 3-4 gallons (13-15 liters), turn ignition switch to OFF position, and go to next step. If fuel gauge reads between 3-4 gallons (13-15 liters), turn ignition switch to OFF position. Go to step  3 .

  2. Check Harness Resistance

    Remove Electronic Instrument Cluster (EIC). See ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Install jumper wire between fuel tank sending unit harness connector terminals. Using DVOM, measure resistance between EIC connector "B" terminals No. 6 circuit 29 (Yellow/White wire) and No. 8 circuit 359 (Black/White wire). See Figure . If reading is 0-1 ohm, go to next step. If reading is greater than one ohm, repair open in circuit 29 (Yellow/White wire). See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .

  3. Check Fuel Sender

    Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove fuel tank sending unit form gas tank. Check for deformed or damaged gas tank, and replace if necessary. With fuel tank sending unit removed, check for binding or sticking mechanical linkage. If fuel tank sending unit is okay, go to next step. If fuel tank sending unit is not okay, replace as required.
