Test SA: Display Does Not Respond To Buttons; No Warning Tone When Buttons Are Pushed Or Driver Alert Given
Following are correct conditions:
- ENGLISH/METRIC cluster control button switch functions only with ignition switch in RUN mode.
- SELECT cluster control button switch functions only with ignition switch in RUN mode.
- SPEED alarm cluster control button switch functions with speed greater than 20 MPH.
- RESET cluster control button switch functions only with ignition switch in RUN mode.
- Warning chime module will not sound cluster warning tone, if another warning tone is being sounded or produced.
- Check Warning Chime Module
Check for warning tone when ignition switch is in RUN position and seat belts are not fastened. Also check for warning tone sounding when key is left in ignition switch (off position) and driver door is opened. If cluster warning tone does not sound, problem exists in warning chime module. Repair/replace as required. If cluster warning tone sounds, go to next step. - Check For Cluster Warning Tones
Turn ignition switch to RUN position. While monitoring Electronic Instrument Cluster (EIC) display and listening for cluster warning tones, press any cluster control button switch (E/M, SELECT, SPEED or RESET). If cluster warning tones and EIC display does not respond, replace EIC. See ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If cluster warning tone does not sound when any cluster control button switch is pressed, go to next step. - Check Cluster Control Button Switch Wiring Connections
Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove dashboard panel trim to expose EIC. See ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Ensure connections at cluster control button switch are secure and making good terminal contact. If connections are not secure, repair/replace wiring harness or connector as required, and recheck. If connections are secure and making good terminal contact, go to next step. - Check Cluster Control Button Switch (No Button Pressed)
Remove cluster control button switch from instrument panel. See ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect cluster control button switch 8-pin connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between specified terminals of cluster control button switch (component side). Measure resistance between cluster control button switch terminals No. 1 circuit 704 (Orange wire) and No. 8 circuit 359 (Black/White wire). See Figure and Fig 1 . If reading is less than 8000 ohms or greater than 9000 ohms, replace cluster control button switch. If reading is 8000-9000 ohms, leave DVOM connected and go to next step. - Check Cluster Control Button Switch (Button Pressed)
With DVOM remaining connected from previous step (between terminals No. 1 and No. 8), measure resistance while depressing each cluster control button switch, one at a time. See CLUSTER CONTROL BUTTON SWITCH RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS table. If readings are within specified range for each cluster control button switch, go to next step. If any cluster control button switch reading is not within specification, replace cluster control button switch.NOTE: Press only one cluster control button switch at a time, when checking resistance.CLUSTER CONTROL SWITCH RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONSButton Ohms E/M 1100-1200 SELECT 100-200 SPEED 2500-2600 RESET 500-600 - Check Cluster Wiring Connections
Remove EIC. See ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Ensure wiring harness connectors "A" and "B" are properly aligned, making good terminal contact and secure at EIC. If connection is okay, go to next step. If connection is faulty, repair or replace as necessary and recheck problem. - Verify Harness Continuity
Using DVOM, check continuity exists in circuit 704 (Orange wire), between EIC harness connector "B" terminal No. 3 and cluster control button switch connector terminal No. 1. See Figure and Fig 1 . Check continuity exists in circuit 359 (Black/White wire) between EIC connector "B" terminal No. 8 and cluster control button switch connector terminal No. 3. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If continuity does not exist in each circuit specified, repair open in failed circuit (s) as necessary. If continuity exists in both circuits specified, go to next step. - Check Tone Circuit
Reconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Allow fasten seat belt reminder cluster warning tone to end. Using a fused jumper wire, connect EIC connector "B" terminal No. 19 (Tan/Yellow wire) to ground. Listen for cluster warning tones. If cluster warning tone is sounded, replace EIC. See ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no cluster warning tone is sounded or produced, repair open in circuit 183 (Tan/Yellow wire) between EIC connector "B" and warning chime module as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
