Speedometer Reads "0" Mph When Vehicle Is In Motion
- Place ignition switch in "RUN" position. Observe display. All segments should come on, go off, and then return to a normal display. If okay, go to next step. If not, replace speedometer module.
- Test drive vehicle to verify that odometer advances when vehicle is driven forward. If odometer advances, replace speedometer module. If odometer does not advance, go to next step.
- Test drive vehicle and check operation of cruise control. If okay, go to step 8). If vehicle is not equipped with cruise control or cruise control does not work, go to next step.
- Disconnect speed sensor connector. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between 2 wires in harness going to speed sensor. Reading should be greater than 500 ohms. If reading is correct, go to next step. If not, repair wiring, cruise control, or instrument cluster for short circuits.
- Using ohmmeter, check resistance at speed sensor. Reading should be between 200-230 ohms. If reading is correct, go to next step. If not, replace speed sensor. Recheck speedometer operation.
- Disconnect speed sensor from transmission. Make sure all teeth of speed sensor driven gear are in good condition. Also check for presence of retainer clip. If okay, go to next step. If not, replace driven gear and/or install clip.
- Check for and make sure all teeth of transmission output shaft drive gear are in good condition. If okay, go to next step. If not, replace transmission output shaft drive gear.
- Connect speed sensor wiring. Remove instrument cluster. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between pin "11C" and pin "7C" (ground). Reading should be 160-230 ohms. If reading is correct, replace speedometer module. If not, repair connectors or wiring from instrument cluster to speed sensor. After repairs, check speedometer operation.
