Air Bag, Side Curtain: Removal
On vehicles equipped with the high voltage system, disconnecting the 12-volt battery negative cable alone will not power down the 12-volt system. You must perform the 12-volt Power Down procedure before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbags, airbag curtains, knee blocker, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS)/negative battery cable assembly from the negative battery post, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.
To avoid serious or fatal injury when removing a deployed airbag, rubber gloves, eye protection, and a long-sleeved shirt should be worn. There may be deposits on the airbag unit and other interior surfaces. In large doses, these deposits may cause irritation to the skin and eyes.
To avoid serious or fatal injury, use extreme care to prevent any foreign material from entering the side curtain airbag, or becoming entrapped between the side curtain airbag cushion and the headliner. Failure to observe this warning could result in occupant injuries upon airbag deployment.
The following procedure is for replacement of an ineffective or damaged side curtain airbag (also known as Side AirBag Inflatable Curtain/SABIC). If the airbag is ineffective or damaged, but not deployed, review the recommended procedures for Handling Non-Deployed Supplemental Restraints. Refer to HANDLING NON-DEPLOYED SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINTS . If the side curtain airbag has been deployed, review the recommended procedures for Service After A Supplemental Restraint Deployment before removing the airbag from the vehicle. Refer to SERVICE AFTER A SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM DEPLOYMENT .
- Perform the 12-Volt Power Down procedure. Refer to 12-VOLT POWER DOWN .
- Remove the headliner from the vehicle. Refer to HEADLINER, REMOVAL .
- Disconnect the body wire harness connector (2) for the side curtain airbag (5) from the connector receptacle at the back of the inflator between the upper inner B-pillar (1) and the upper inner C-pillar.
- Remove the screw (4) that secures the rear locating hook of the side curtain airbag to the weld nut in the upper inner C-pillar.
- Remove the nut that secures the side curtain airbag rear tether anchor to the weld stud on the upper inner C-pillar.
- Disengage the rear tether anchor from the upper inner C-pillar.
- Remove the screw (1) that secures the side curtain airbag (2) front tether to the lower inner A-pillar (3).
- Remove the remaining screws (1) that secure the side curtain airbag (2) and the inflator bracket to the inner roof side rail.
- Disengage the push-in plastic fastener that secures the side curtain airbag mounting tab to the inner A-pillar.
- Disengage the remaining locating hooks of the side curtain airbag from the inner roof side rail.
- Disengage the remaining hook and T-tab that secure the side curtain airbag inflator from the slots in the inner roof side rail.
- Remove the side curtain airbag from the vehicle as a unit.
