Sunroof, Single Pane: Installation

CAUTION:

Protect all exposed painted and trimmed surfaces from coming in contact with urethane and primers

NOTE:

When the sunroof frame has been removed it cannot be reused. If necessary, keep the sunroof parts that have been removed.

  1. Before proceeding with the following repair procedure, review all warnings and cautions. Refer to STATIONARY GLASS, WARNING .
  2. If the sunroof frame did not come with all the sunroof components install as necessary. Refer to the necessary installation procedures.
  3. Using a razor knife, level the remaining urethane bead (1) on the vehicle, down to approximately 1 mm (.04 in.) on the vehicle's sunroof opening.
  4. Thoroughly clean the sunroof frame mating surface on the vehicle by first blowing it off with compressed air and then wiping the area with a clean, lint-free cloth, moistened with a 50% solution of water and alcohol.
  5. Dry the area immediately, with a lint free cloth.

  6. Install the liftgate spoiler to be certain of proper gap and flush dimensions, Refer to SPOILER, INSTALLATION .
  7. Wipe the sunroof frame mating area with a clean, lint-free cloth, moistened with a 50% solution of water and alcohol.
    NOTE:

    Follow the urethane primer manufacturer recommendations for application and dry time.

  8. Apply urethane primer to any paint that may have been damaged on the roof flanges and headers during removal, ONLY within any area that the sunroof frame will cover. 
  9. If the body side apertures or headers have been refinished, apply urethane primer to the mating surfaces.
  10. Apply primer to the a new sunroof frame mating surface and allow to dry to manufacturer recommendations.
  11. Locate the spacers (1) located on the four corners of the sunroof frame, two in the front and two in the rear. These spacers will determine the vertical position of the sunroof frame to the roof opening.
  12. With the help of three assistants plus one inside the vehicle, trial fit the assembly by positioning the sunroof assembly in the roof opening, centering the sunroof studs into the holes in the body.

  13. Flush (height) measurements must take into account the additional height of the urethane beads.
  14. Align the sunroof Frame and glass as follows:
    • Roof to front sunroof glass (1): Gap- Gap 5 mm ± 2.6
    • Body side to front sunroof glass (2): Gap 4 mm ± 1.2 mm / Over Flush 2.3 mm + 1.5 mm - 1.5 mm
    • Body side to rear sunroof glass (3): Gap 4 mm ± 1.2 mm / Over Flush 2.7 mm + 1.5 mm - 1.5 mm
    • Rear sunroof glass to liftgate spoiler (4): Gap 6.5 mm ± 1.4 mm / Over Flush 0.5 mm ± 1.8 mm

  15. Once the sunroof assembly (2) has been centered, mark the position of the assembly in relation to the body using strips of masking tape (2), to aid in installation alignment.
  16. Cut the strips of masking tape along the perimeter of the sunroof assembly.

  17. Remove the sunroof assembly from the vehicle.
  18. Apply a 1.5 cm (3/8 in.) bead of urethane (1) to the sunroof frame where indicated, starting at the rear center and continue around the perimeter of the sunroof frame.
  19. With the help of three assistants plus one inside the vehicle, position the sunroof assembly into the roof opening, without delay.
  20. Align to the tape placed during trail fit alignment.

  21. Working on the rear inner side of the roof, install the fasteners (1) securing the rear of the sunroof frame, located inside the holes.
  22. Tighten the fasteners securely.
  23. If necessary, apply retaining straps to keep sunroof assembly at described position.
  24. Remove the masking tape placed along the body perimeter.
  25. Allow the urethane to dry per manufacturer recommendations.

  26. Position and secure the wiring harnesses (1) along the perimeter of the sunroof frame.
  27. Install the side curtain air bag (2). Refer to AIR BAG, SIDE CURTAIN, INSTALLATION .
  28. Install the sunroof frame seal. Refer to SEAL, SUNROOF GLASS, INSTALLATION .
  29. Install the sunroof glass. Refer to GLASS, SUNROOF, INSTALLATION .
  30. Install the satellite antenna. Refer to ANTENNA, SATELLITE, INSTALLATION .
  31. Install the right and left sunshade guides (1). Refer to GUIDE, SUNROOF, GLASS, INSTALLATION .
  32. Install the sunshade. Refer to SUNSHADE, SUNROOF, INSTALLATION .
  33. Install the mechanism tubes. Refer to TUBE, MECHANISM, INSTALLATION .
  34. Perform the sunroof and sunshade initialization procedure. Refer to MOTOR, SUNROOF, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  35. If necessary, align the sunshade.
  36. Operate the sunroof and sunshade to verify proper function and fit.
  37. Install the headliner. Refer to HEADLINER, INSTALLATION .
